Well, I'm just not educated in what GNI actually means.  The definition I found online is:

GNI comprises the total value produced within a country (i.e. its Gross Domestic Product), together with its income received from other countries (notably interest and dividends), less similar payments made to other countries.

So I guess (?) that means how wealthy we are as a nation, right?  Does it include our debt?  If you include national debt in the calculation, where does that put us?

I'd like to see the stats for individual citizens donations to charity in various countries (on average).  The US might, as a government, give less on a GNI basis than many others, but how does that translate into the amount given by individuals on avergae?  I don't know.  I tend to think (yes I don't know), that American citizens give, on average, a lot more than citizens in some of the countries that give based on GNI.  I could be talking out of my ass though.

Pretty shitty turning some girls rape into a case against healthcare.  no

Agreed.  Horrible thread really.

But I want to respond to the issue raised about US charity in terms of totals vs. percentages.  See, I know the US is way down the chart in the percentage given, but to me the significantly more important stat is the total amount given.  I mean that has the real impact, right?  GNP is basicall the dollar value of goods and services (goods) produced in any given year at market price (current price).   I'm not sure if you can use that to compare the generosity of a nation.  I'm not an economist and admit that I don't know how the definition of GNP relates to generosity.

I'm not so sure why so many of you actually enjoy painting the US is as poor a light as possible.  Are most people in this secion from outside the US?

i love how the sarcasm of the title of this thread has flown WAY over your heads....

Not at all.  I get your point.  I'm just saying it's a false connection.  Healthcare has nothing to do with this guy being a rapist.  If he were a US citizen, fully insured, and had payed in full every medical bill he had ever received, this rape would be just as awful.  If he was a Canadian, who received free healthcare in his own country, and was here on a vacation, this rape would be just as awful.  You're using one horrific act to make a claim about the validity of something completely unconnected.
