Velvet Revolver in the frame for Led Zeppelin support
14 Mar 2008

Duff McKagan has exclusively revealed to Hot Press that Velvet Revolver are in pole position to support Led Zeppelin if they decide to go ahead with a full-blown reunion tour.

?I understand that we have it, although I imagine there will be plenty of bands prepared to kick and punch us out of the way for the privilege!? laughs the former Guns ?N? Roses man and all round rock ?n? roll legend. ?I would so love to have been at their London gig before Christmas, but we had dates of our own that obviously took precedence.

?What made up for it was running into Jimmy Page at an awards ceremony and him not only knowing who I was, but also saying he?d caught a couple of Velvet Revolver shows. No way did I think in 1977 when I saw Led Zep in Seattle that one day I?d be hanging out with the guitarist. Things like that I still pinch myself!?

Meeting up this week with Hot Press before the second of Velvet Revolver?s Ambassador Theatre shows, Duff also talked about the early days of Seattle, his favourite Guns ?N? Roses moments, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, his love for Ireland and what Velvet Revolver got up to while staying in Dublin. You?ll be able to read all about it in a forthcoming issue!

Hope this is true but.....I read somewhere that Led Zep were not touring. Apparently Robert Plant was the one who held it all up.  He said they proved in December that they could get back out there and do it.  He felt they didn't need a whole tour to prove themselves again.  Wish I could remember where I saw that to provide a link.

You should have seen the cover they wanted to do. It wasn't a glove, believe me.

and dont forget that Slash and Page are friends and have been friends for years.. They seem to have great mutual respect for eachother, so they have someone in Led who back them up personally... ok

I guess he would rather bang Allison Krauss.

I think Plant is scared that they can't top that one night and  the tour may dissappoint some.

I wouldn't put too much stock into this.  After all, Ian Astbury said that the Cult were going to tour with Led Zep as well  ok

If it happens (and I doubt it will), I would expect a different opener for different legs of the alleged tour.

The Cult, VR, whomever...

Yes, I agree.  But, my point was that it is all speculation at this point.  The Cult are speculating they will open part of the tour, so is VR.  In the end it's all speculation.

Well it would still be great, velvet revolver are probably the band most akin to Led Zeppelin around today (in the mainstream eye) and it would be a great package.

in terms of musical style and diversity.  Not saying they are close to as good, but they have the same sort of attitude.  You've gotta admit, it'd be a good bill of Velvet Revolver followed by Led Zeppelin.

the same sort of attitude.

does VR play a +3 hours set padded with the 'who cares if the audience all go out to dinner while we're rambling on ' drum and guitar solos?

No, but it would be cool if they did.  I once knew a band like that!  Oh ya, GNR 1991-1993.
