Sympathy for the Devil (GNR version)
«
on:

so i saw some other topics talking about "sympathy for the devil" but they havent been posted on in a long time...
I don't understand why there is so much negativity surrounding this cover by GNR...I consistently hear how bad it is, and I have to say I have always been a fan of it since it came out...I think it was Blender or some magazine like that that said the GNR version was so bad that it ruins the Stones version...I just don't get where people are coming from with this...
I get alot of crap for saying this but I will go as far as to say that "Sympathy for the Devil" is just a shit song to begin with..I LOVE the Stones...but I have NEVER understood what was so special about this song...the stones version sounds like a MESS....I do however LOVE the GNR version...i think it is far and away better than the original so when I hear so many people go out of their way to say how GNR ruined this song it just boggles my mind....what do you guys think?

I like the song. I don't know if I'd say it's better than the original, but I certainly wouldn't say it ruined the original either. Solid song, and as Slash would say, "that's the sound of the band breaking up".

I like this song a lot too. Much better than the original, IMO. Axl does the vocals so much better. Jagger sounds like he was half asleep when he recorded that.

And that's saying something.
He's good in the clip though.........I think Marianne is in it too.

Original is better , way better. They did justice to it though for sure , good sounding song although their is something guitar wise that has always bugged me not sure if its Slash or Paul but it sounds nasty lol.

Haven't listened to it in a few years, but when it came out I loved the guitar soloing, even the stuff that Paul played on there that Slash supposedly hates. It's not one of GN'Rs best covers, but it is solid nevertherless.

it's overblown and not a great interpretation. The stones version is very minimalistic, and well off for it. This version has none of the menace, imho.

GNR version is ok, nothing spectacular.
the original though is a masterpiece, one of the best songs of all time. it is so original and obscure, it gives me chills.
GNR imo did a corporate rock version of the original

IMO there is a select group of songs that should never be allowed to be covered by law and should be penalized by death. This song is one of them. The list would go one but i.e
Hey Jude
Stairway to Heaven
Imagine
Bohemian Rhapsody
Welcome to the Jungle
etc.

I like their version. Like Slash and Paul Tobia's guitar duel and even Matts drum. Axl was indeed nailing it, so I can't really complain about the song...
I went to that movie just for listening it by that time, but it's actually a good movie too.

I think the song is good, it's funny though in Slash's book, he says he recorded his guitar parts on the song in his style but Axl hated it and pretty much forced him to re-record his guitar parts to make it sound more like the original. That's something I never knew. It's interesting for sure!
I wish their last song was an original instead of a cover though.

Well, wasn't his last solo original? I guess only the middle solo (the one with Paul mirror guitar) was like the original.
Just thought one thing: the last old GNR song recorded and released was Get In The Ring, right? Or was something else from the Illusions?

The cover is good. The outro solo is awesome. The first solo, just like Keith's, and the guitar underneath is kind of lame.
sorum shined on this one too.
