I'm generally not one for ironic covers, but Victoria Bergsman's charming, piano-driven take on the G'n'R classic is sweet and earnest enough to warrant a mention.

LOL, I completely disagree. If you like Indie music check it out. If you are a die hard Galm Rock or Metal fan forget it. Taken By Trees is a critically acclaimed indie band, but thier music is soft and sweet. For someone to say it's "terrible" just says that they don't like the genre.

I can't listen at work either, but it amazes me that people would even touch SCOM... it's so perfect already that any cover is going to have a hard time sounding any good.
If I were doing a cover, I would choose a more obscure song.

The thing is, most bands would only be inspired by a reasonably small portion of GN'R's catalogue. I don't imagine Taken By Trees would be inspired by Anything Goes or Shotgun Blues. I am surprised that Civil War doesn't get more cover love.

people cover songs to get publicity and also it's an easy way to get a hit from something that already was a hit
