Tonight in Rock: Camp Freddy Packs Up

The insane madness that is Camp Freddy comes to an end tonight for their May residency at The Roxy. If you know nothing about the project, it's a loose conglomerate of old school rockers (Dave Navarro, Billy Morrison, Scott Weiland, etc) who put together jam sessions of sorts, and always with bigger name special guests. Tonight there are promises of big surprises and we can only take an educated guess based on mumblings that there will be appearances by Juliette Lewis and Billy Idol (and many more). Next month's Roxy residency will be Travis Barker and A.M.

Camp Freddy wrapped up their 5 show Residency at the Roxy last night and what a way to wrap it up! It would be nice If I could remember the long list of special guests, but there were so many it all seems very blurry now...

Maybe I would remember the special guests but my jaw dropped when Robby Krieger from the Doors walked out onto that stage! And Billy Idol. Billy Idol. Billy Idol. (Can you tell I am a fan?)

Juliette Lewis was there and I knew she was in a band but had never seen her perform. She really rocked Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.

The music was rocking the house as usual. It is hard because I go from rocking out to be in complete awe from moment to moment.

The stage presence of Camp Freddy is a Rock N Roll Force to be reckoned with. Billy, Matt, Donovan, Chris and Dave as a group are completely awesome and fun to watch. Then they start bringing out guest after guest and you get lost in the moment.

I love live music. And Camp Freddy is live rock n roll at it's finest.

Other guests included the singer from 311, the singer from train, the drummer from 9 inch nails, the vocalist from static x, uhhhh (I am sorry I need to catch up with the newer musicians I am so stuck in the past musically), Whoever was drumming for Billy Idol was AWESOME but I don't know who it was, if anyone does let me know... There was a lot of others and they were ALL talented.

Oh, and some dude from Lost came on and played guitar that was cool for the Lost fans in the house."

Idol, Stevens close out Camp Freddy residency at Roxy

Summer camp is officially over. Rock ?n? roll summer camp courtesy of Camp Freddy, that is. The supergroup of Los Angeles-area rockers, consisting of Dave Navarro, Billy Morrison, Matt Sorum, Donovan Leitch and Chris Chaney, ended its monthlong residency at the Roxy last night with a bang ? landing Billy Idol as closing guest.

?This one?s for you, Jonesy,? a smiling Idol said before he launched into ?Dancing With Myself? from the stage to a sold-out, rapturous audience obviously clued in to the evening?s special guest (fashion selections among the aging Idol groupies were verging on tragic). But despite the title of the tune, Idol was not dancing with himself Thursday evening ? he brought with him a few special guests.

Idol was joined onstage with longtime guitarist Steve Stevens and the Doors? Robby Krieger, both of whom helped give the three-song final act a precious feel in spirit of the May celebration of all things rock at the Roxy.

The sneering ?80s icon began the last set of the evening with an extended, metal-tinged version of ?L.A. Woman,? which took on obvious significance given the location of the gig on the Strip and Krieger?s presence onstage. The former Generation X singer seemed to be having the time of his life onstage, even doling out a few trademark Idol sneers with a wink as if it were 1984.

For Idol fans, the true highlight of the night was a song that broke big that very year, ?Rebel Yell.? Without the slick synths the track is known for, ?Rebel Yell? with Camp Freddy was a monster. Stevens? guitar work was searing and Idol was in full-on icon mode, pumping his fist into the air, seemingly genuinely into the moment, despite presumably loathing the tune after how popular it was in the 1980s (it was one of his signature hits).

Other highlights of the final installment of Camp Freddy?s Roxy residency included Juliette Lewis? reverential takes on X?s ?Los Angeles,? Van Halen?s ?Ain?t Talkin? ?Bout Love? and AC/DC?s ?Dirty Deeds.? Earlier in the evening, 311?s Nick Hexum actually pulled off a convincing but perhaps too-karaoke-perfect version of the Clash?s ?White Man in Hammersmith Palais,? but the crowd response was tepid at best. These were rock fans with a capital R, hell-bent on seeing guests like Alice in Chains? Jerry Cantrell tear it up with Freddy onstage, and no one here was copping to even knowing who Hexum was.

Regardless, most everyone was happy just to be inside the venerable Sunset Boulevard venue late Thursday night, if only to say goodbye (for now, anyway) to the best house band on the Strip for a while.

CAMP FREDDY?s final sold-out show of their month-long May residency at The Roxy in West Hollywood culminated last night (May 29) with a special appearance by Billy Idol. Idol, guitarist Steve Stevens and drummer Brian Tichy treated the packed house to a cover of The Doors? "LA Woman," also featuring The Doors own Robbie Krieger on guitar along with CAMP FREDDY. The crowd went wild when Idol, Stevens, Tichy and CAMP FREDDY--BILLY MORRISON, DAVE NAVARRO, MATT SORUM, DONOVAN LEITCH and CHRIS CHANEY--launched into Idol?s classic hits "Dancing with Myself" and "Rebel Yell."

Another highlight of the night was a duet by Juliette Lewis and LEITCH on X?s ?Los Angeles.? In a surprise twist, while millions of ?Lost? fans were at home watching the two-hour season finale of the hit show, Naveen Andrews (?Sayid? on the show) joined CAMP FREDDY onstage to play guitar on the Sex Pistols? ?EMI.? Andrews also joined in the all-star CAMP FREDDY finale of The Stooges? ?I Wanna Be Your Dog,? when Olympic Gold Medalist snowboarder Shawn White also came to the stage to lend his vocal pipes. Earlier in the night, Train?s Pat Monahan belted out a powerful rendition of Led Zeppelin?s "Whole Lotta Love" with Krieger on guitar.

The star-studded night also featured special appearances from the following additional music guests: Nick Hexum (311), Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains), Mark McGrath (Sugar Ray), Chris Vrenna (Marilyn Manson, Gnarls Barkley, NIN), Wayne Static (Static-X), John5 (Rob Zombie), Leah Duors (McQueen) and the all-female punk rock dance group the Darling Stilettos (featured each week).

The residency ends on a high note

Camp Freddy's five-week residency at The Roxy had a Hollywood ending. This is the Sunset Strip we're talking about. What else would you expect? The final, triumphant scene played out with Dave Navarro, Robby Krieger of The Doors and Billy Idol all on the same stage. It was a veritable cavalcade of rock 'n' roll legends celebrating music and their friendship. After four weeks of jaw-dropping performances and one surprise guest after another, Camp Freddy closed out their last Roxy show with a bang. It was the biggest and best Camp Freddy performance of the five-gig residency, and it left the sold out crowd salivating for more.

The show began just like the others. Navarro, Donovan Leitch, Chris Chaney, Billy Morrison and Matt Sorum powered through high-energy renditions of Cheap Trick's "Hello There" and Blur's "Song 2." Instantly, the sweaty crowd started dancing and jumping around. In fact, many of the faces were familiar to Camp Freddy, as the diehard fans all made sure to show up for the last hurrah at Camp. Right after "Song 2," Navarro exclaimed, "Now I'd like to introduce Nick Hexum from 311." However, he and the crowd both got a surprise when Wayne Static, the throaty mainman of cyber-metal maestros Static-X, emerged from stage right. Navarro joked, "That's not Nick! It's Wayne Static!" The crowd cheered, and Wayne sauntered to the microphone. His trademark hair stretched two-feet high, and his goatee dangled about 12-inches off his chin. As always, Wayne proved primed to explode. Navarro kicked off a heavy gain version of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid," and Wayne ripped it. His industrial metal wail brought the song to life with a Terminator-style violence. The sweat poured off the stage and off the audience as everyone kept grooving to Wayne's "Evil Disco" tweaking of the classic metal track. He was all smiles too, keeping it fun.

Finally, Nick Hexum came out for the next track, a fun collaboration on "White Man in Hammersmith Palais" by The Clash. He infused a reggae funk swagger into the song as he got lost in each and every line. The tri fecta of hard rock to follow would ignite the packed Roxy. Juliete Lewis hit the stage for searing renditions of X's "Lost Angeles," Van Halen's "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" and AC/DC's "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap." She gyrated around like a female Mick Jagger, nailing each of the songs with a punky, rock 'n' roll gusto. After belting out "Rock 'N' Roll Star" by Oasis, Billy Morrison asked regular guest Billy Duffy, "What are you wearing?" Duffy smirked and responded, "My Sorum Noce leather jacket, of courseit's perfect for rock shows!" It was a subtle and funny plug for Sorum NoceCamp Freddy drummer Matt Sorum's boutique couture men's clothing line with designer Max Noce. Everyone laughed, and it was another moment that all of the entertainment business elite in the crowd could appreciate. The best part of Camp Freddy is that it marries a feeling of suave L.A. superstar power with pure rock energygiving the camp a sunny location somewhere beautiful between Rodeo Drive and Sunset Blvd.

Jerry Cantrell collaborated on a catchy and groove-driven "Man In the Box" with Leah Duors of McQueen. Her voice brought the song a strange vulnerability. The most amazing moment saw Robby Krieger of The Doors join Camp Freddy on stage. Dave Navarro described him as one of the men "That started the Sunset Strip." He played a rocking version of "Whole Lotta Love" with Pat Monahan from Train doing a faithful and worthy Robert Plant impersonation. The ending then saw Krieger blaze through Doors' classic "L.A. Woman" with Billy Idol on vocals. It was utterly perfect, as Camp Freddy's always packed with those kind of girls Jim Morrison immortalized on tape. Idol finished off "Dancing With Myself" and "Rebel Yell" with the all-star cast, before one more group gathering on "I Wanna Be Your Dog."

In the end, you couldn't script an ending this good, and every performer got his closeup. It was even better than most Hollywood endings. Let's hope there's a sequel soon.
