What the hell is going on?!?!?  The first time I saw Rocket Queen live was '91 in St. Louis.  Didn't get to hear too much of it before Axl jumped off stage.  Had no clue what was transpiring at the time.

Ain't it Fun

One of the best cover versions of another band's song I've heard.
Captures the energy, emotion and the spirit of the original so well while adding a distinct GNR sound to it.
Before I listened to it for the first time in about 1997 I wasn't sure what to expect since it was a "popular" hard rock band covering an obscure punk song but I was surprised and blown away. I was always a 'standard' fan of GNR, meaning I knew a handful of their songs and appreciated them, but when I heard this cover I went and checked out more of their music, and as they say, it's never been the same since.

my favoriate song, every good band/singer has a protest song, black sabbath, country joe & fish, bob dylan....etc etc

the song has a lot of robin hood sentiment and rebellion with a sweet sadness and I love it. it is the one song I had wished axl would have sang when he toured recently.... Sad

I remember hearing My Michelle in high school.  At the time it was one of the darkest songs I had ever heard.  "you daddy watches porno" line had such a sinister feel to it.  I felt like Axl was singing from the back corner of a closet in some cockroach-infested trailer.  When I first bought AFD, this was easily my favorite song.  It was also at the beginning of the second side of the cassette...so it was the easiest to rewind and relisten to.

Buick Mcane:
Not much going on lyrically, but the Buick, Buick, Buick Mcane sounds soooo Cool!! I'm going to pull out the SI and listen to it today!!!!
How about
Loud Love!
As the liner notes suggest a great song can be found anywhere.
I suggest picking up a copy of this classic SoundGarden album. It's when they rocked before they became "Grunge".

and not buick mackane by trex?

Am I wrong in thinking GNR hasn't covered loud love or you forgot to give a GNR song?  if the latter, allow me to suggest

I'm assuming then that the queue for the next song to discuss was "Down on the Farm"..

Anyway, cool cover version. I guess I can only echo my comments that I made earlier regarding "Ain't it Fun".
Another unexpected cover version of an obscure punk song which greatly increased my interest in the band outside the "popular" songs that I knew.

Epic in a lot of ways (and sadly the song that probably was the beginning of the end).  I rarely play it because I prefer the harder stuff most of the time.

Oh my god

Yeah, I was waiting for somebody to come out with this.

It was a special moment experiencing the release of a new Guns N Roses song.
Awesome song, very underrated, unfortunately though the potential of the song was defeated by the production, or lack of.
The sound is too muddy. The drums don't really drive the song as they should, they are too low in the mix.
The guitars are present but I felt they could have been more defined to give the song more edge particularly in the chorus.
A great song though.

If the song had the same kind of attention as the rough mixes of the new songs which leaked, then it would be perfect.

Rhiad:
The begining reminded me of Zep's Immigrant Song.. Only 2 live versions exist, so it's hard to decipher, but it does have potential..Out of the new songs played at those 2 shows I feel this was the worst..Lyrics were hard to understand...

Your Crazy (from LIES)

I think the LIES version of Your Crazy is vastly superior to the Appetite version.  There's just something about the guitar work on this song that makes me love it so much.  In fact the whole b-side of Lies is amazing.. but this song anchors it IMO.  Listening to the song structure, the guitar, the vocal line, it's hard to imagine that the boys thought it would be a good idea to change it into the Appetite version.  I do however like the Appetite version, it's just that the Lies version is a stand out song in my opinion, one of their best, where the Appetite version just kind of struggles to get noticed on AFD.

Your Crazy (AFD):
More approriate for AFD..Imagine the slower version, may have thrown off the whole feel for the album..Much faster paced...Back in 1987/1988 not many songs had Fuck in 'em...Much so repeated as frequently as does Your Crazy, It's so Easy, and lets not forget Out to Get Me, and Mr. Brownstone.  AFD has to be the 1st highly commercially succesful album w/ the Parental Advisory warning on it.

TWAT

There Was A Time is my favorite of all the new songs.  This song is what Gn'R is all about in my opinion, it's just epic.  I love the old intro, but I love the new intro even more.  That piano into is hauntingly awesome.  And then when the verses kick in?  Axl's voice is stupendous.  The verses in TWAT are some of Axl's best singing ever, and that's saying a lot.  The chorus isn't my favorite part of the song, but when you get to the almost gospel sounding "there was a time, didn't want to it all, didn't want to know it all, and I don't want to know it now" it just puts the song over the top for me.  Just hauntingly brilliant.  Axl's cries during the long epic solos are amazing... and speaking of the long epic solos, they're just captivating.

TWAT is just a brilliant song, a beautiful peice of art, and Axl is really depriving the people of true beauty by not releasing Chinese Democracy and this song to the world.  Oh and the new ending is fantastic.

No matter how I look at it, it sucks.  It's a horrible song, anyway.  And, written by Manson.  Come on.  I can be very open minded, but I fail to see the "art in the song".

Damn, i hate that song. I think GnR did two bad songs, that and My world.  Its just too hard and noisy.  Not good noisy like Get in the Ring or Welcome.

It's honestly not one I listen to a lot just because I like their other material better, but it wasn't a bad cover.  Then again, I'm a bit of a cover-whore anyway.   Tongue
