Imho, Izzy Stradlin & The Ju Ju Hounds is his best, and Ride On is also great.  The recent Miami is also good.  But get the JJH one first, imho.

Imo 117 is the best aka it has the most variety, but polls on the Izzy board showed that lot's of people have different albums as a favorite. River's my least favorite for example but to many it's a favorite. I listen to an Izzy album depending on my mood..

I do think one should see JJH seperatly as all the other albums he's made, it's just a different band and completely different sound/style.

With that said I'd say in terms of sound and songs Ride On comes closest to 117, then you have River which has a very polished bassy Faces kind of sound, then there's On Down The Road which comes very close to the Stones sound, maybe even more then JJH. Then there's Like A Dog which is by far the most aggressive album, it's pure hardrock that resembles the GN'R sound most. Then there's Miami which is more into the direction of 117 and Ride On. And finally there's Fire which is the all-acoustic album and also pretty damn cool, it's like a collection of the 117/ODTR acoustics. The sound reminds me of the Stones' Beggars Banquet.

Like a Dog is almost punk in its intensity and comin' at you approach. it is really great.  I love it while driving, and no one fucks with me!
I did not like Miami that much at all. But I only listened once, and it was after Like a Dog, which to me is second only to 117.
The others, River, Ride on, On down the road are all very listenable and generally good. It is clear that Izzy was the main songwriter for  Guns, and a major talent.

I have not checked out his acoustic album yet, but it is on my "to get" list, maybe this weekend.

I would say if you're a big fan of the songs Izzy sang on the Illusion albums check out Like a Dog next. That album is the closest thing those songs. My least favorite is probably either the Ju Ju hounds album or Miami, even tho I listen to both reguarly and they're still very good. On down the road is a really good one. The 1st couple tracks are more rockin then the whole middle of the album Izzy does some amazing acoustic songs. Some of his best songs ever in my opinion. You really can't go wrong tho cause River is amazing and so is Ride On. Ride On as a whole isn't as consistent as his others, it's got peaks and valleys, but the peaks are way up there, especially Highway Zero and the title track which are two of my favorite songs ever.

1st release = very badly mixed / not mastered @ Criteria Studios in Miami where it's also recorded late 2004 / early 2005 (I have a feeling Izzy mixed it himself).

2nd release = very good mixed / mastered by JT Longoria @ Nomad Studios in Dallas (Like A Dog was also recorded and mixed/mastered there)

I don't think the 1st release is available anymore on iTunes, but if it still is you don't wanna buy it. Go for the 2nd release, that one is properly mixed and mastered. Only downside is that the 1st release had 11 tracks - the 11th track being 'FSO Ragga' but it's not on the 2nd release, according to JT probably because Izzy spent a lot of time on that mix (you'll understand when you hear it) and couldn't be bothered again.

In terms of sound and style I'd say Miami is like a mix of '117 degrees' and 'Ride On'. If you're gonna buy it you might aswell check out the all acoustic album that was released last November and was recorded in August last year at Izzy's house. It's got some great acoustic rock tunes..

117 and JJH are both great albums.  The others vary in style, from album to album.  I personally think Fire (acoustic) is interesting to listen to, and Like a Dog is probably his hardest hitting effort.  On Down the Road has what might be my favorite Izzy song, in "Sweet Caress."

You can't really go wrong, assuming you like Izzy.

For me 117? n' Like a dog are the best album... 117? is more representative of all Izzy material n' LAD is the more hard rocker side (plus punk minus Stones influence here)...
