Anyone interested or liking theatre here ?

Hi there,
Who likes theatre ( written theater in american), classical plays or contempory plays ?
Have you seen any ? Or done any ?
It seems like people never talk of it, it's always music or movies.

When my wife and I were dating in college, a girl on our floor was doing a "modern dance" performance. We went with a bunch of people from our floor. About 10 minutes into the performance, we got a really bad case of the giggles. I mean really bad. There were guys in tights. There were people doing really funny things but the humor seemed to be lost on the rest of the audience. Luckily it was very dark and I had to get the hell out before I burst out laughing. I found the closest door and it happened to be the next crew of dancers preparing. It was great. I got to say hello to the girl we knew and I proceeded to wait outside the place until it was through.
I am not a big fan of plays and/or musicals either...now if it was ever GNR related, I'm there!!!

I enjoy it. Plays, especially, and the occasional musical. I saw Miss Saigon a long time ago, and really liked it. Rent, too.
Not big on dance, though. I guess I just don't "get" it. Especially ballet.

I said it in another thread...I'll say it here. What I allegedly did in college has no bearing on this campaign.

I saw Lorca's Blood Wedding once. A really great play performed by amateurs.
Personally, I never received any training in acting but my job led me to improvize myself as a stage director
It's quite fun. I'm not looking for high performances - I work with kids anyway ; I just want those kids to have a great time playing roles and using space. It's very rewarding when shy kids start to pace around and say their lines without being afraid of other kids' sarcasms.

Have never really been huge on either but it is a family tradition each christmas holiday to go to see Nutcracker Ballet, I do look forward to and enjoy that each year.
I also within the last couple of years enjoyed a couple of plays my parents were involved in with their church, one of them was The Odd Couple and it was a great play, I don't know if this is the kind of experience you are talking about, but they are the ones I have had.

I love that play, I'm a big fan of Garcia Lorca. I've never seen it dramatized but I've read it as well as some of his other tragedies in high school and in college.

yeah, that always puts me in a Christmasy mood and humming along to Tchaikovsky's brilliant music.
A contemporary play that some folks here might like is Rock N' Roll by Tom Stoppard. Inspired by Syd Barrett and the Czech revolution, it's earned great reviews.
It's playing on Broadway right now, check it out:

^I really would like to see Blood Wedding again. It was really awesome !
Now I remember I saw an open air performance of a Shakespeare play in London... It must be 'selective memory' for I actually went there with my ex bf

I never read the play so I can't tell about Lorca's intentions about stage arrangements. The performance I attended didn't have a fancy set, the stage was pretty bare. It was like the only thing you could see was the actors' intensity.

something similar happened to me when i saw les miserables. in one scene there is a lot of "fog" caused by a smoke machine. someone left it on a little too long and everyone in the first few rows (myself included) got gassed. people were coughing and choking and it was clearly a mistake. it was the funniest fucking thing in the world to me though and I couldn't stop chuckling/giggling. I had to bite down on my thumb really hard and chastise myself for acting like I was 12 when in fact I was in my mid 20s.
when i get the giggles I get them REALLY bad.
I like the theater, but only when the tix are free.

Don't feel bad. I guarantee you that if my wife and I had seen that happen, we'd spend about 30 seconds trying very hard not to look at each other, then I'd look, just to be a dick, and then it'd be all over. Sounds hilarious!

Nowadays, there are last minute tickets available on the net on specific sites and some of the seats are at a 1/4 of their price so it's very worth it, cheap and well seated. Nit it's last minute, so you have to be available.

A guy from my school was in Miss Saigon.
You know, it's really funny, because the singing teacher ( isobel humpfries, i love you forever whereever you are now) told him he'd never make it to musicals ? well, she was wrong. I still love her though.

Theatre is great with kids, not just shy ones, but all kids. It's very therapeutical in every sense of the word.
It works very well with adults who are or have to be high achievers too.
Which is why snoby me has always been impressed by stage actors whereas movie stars mean nothing to me.

I love the theatre! I have a bachelor's degree in performance theatre and worked for awhile after college. I have acted and worked many shows. Theatre is very different than doing a movie - IMO it's much harder. The audience is right there and you must capture them almost instantly or risk losing them for the rest of the play.
I have seen too many shows to mention. As a matter of fact, I'm going to see Jersey Boys on Feb 1 with my mom. My husband went with me for a couple shows but he is like most men - please don't take me, I beg you. He just cannot sit there and listen unless they are talking about sports. Now, when I was in a show, he came and he liked it because he knew me.
I have seen everything from interpretation theatre to improv dancing to comedy and everything in between. As a matter of fact, I worked lighting for the two Noel Coward plays you mentioned. They are both great!
I love to read as well so anytime a book is made into a play, I love to go and see how they are presenting it.
And theatre is great for kids. My friend is a minister who uses theatre with some Chicago street gangs to get them to do something positive with their time instead of smoking dope, dealing drugs, and fighting. And she gears it towards the more hip plays out there today so they aren't trying to read shakespeare and are like what the f*** is this?
And I got the giggles once too but it was during a job interview and the company was showing a bunch of potential new employers a film about their company. Someone on the screen said something really cheesy and I just started laughing - I was laughing so hard to myself I was shaking the whole row of people who were looking at me. I couldn't stop. Tears started streaming out of my eyes. I had to leave before I started laughing out loud and blowing the whole interview. I left excusing myself for the bathroom but didn't go back. I was too embarrassed.
I just took my daughter to see Annie and Wicked. She liked both so I hope I have a new partner to go to shows with me. And you can always volunteer for tickets or to seat people at local theatres and the place usually lets you watch the show for free. I did that a lot during college. And Jessica is right about the discount tickets too. Plus, I take my daughter to matinees which are usually less expensive.
