Saw Lanegan at the Islington Academy last night. A really nice venue for this kind of show.

The opening act wasn't any good. I don't even know what they were called.

Great show. Played lots of tracks from Bubblegun as well as stuff like "Pendulum", "I'll Take Care Of You", "No Easy Action", "Miracle" etc.  Cool

The opening act were called The Duke Spirit Wink

It sucked, there was no breakdancing contest, no MC, no mad beats.

The music was great, he sang great, played great tunes.
Methamphetamine Blues was amazing.

First day in London (ever) and I'm gonna go see Mark Lanegan.

We got to the venue after being a little lost in Islington. Finally we found it (and a bar) so we went in and had a beer. Then AdZ shows up and after a while we head to the venue. It's basically a club with two bars on the sides. We wait and then the opening act starts playing. All of their songs sounded the same to me, maybe because I wasn't familiar with any of them.

Mark starts his set and I can't believe how good it sounds.

The set list for the show was:

When Your Number Isn't Up
Hit The City
Wedding Dress
Creeping Coastline
No Easy Action
Miracle
One Hundred Days
Sideways In Reverse
One Way Street
Come To Me
Resurrection Song
Driving Death Valley Blues
I'll Take Care Of You
Little Willie John
Skeletal History
Methamphetamine Blues

Encore:
Message To Mine.
Sleep With Me
Pendulum
Fix

Basically the whole show I was just standing there and watching him in amazement.? Grin I know AdZ did the same.

I read a review about the show the day after and it mentioned how Mark is lacking in charisma or something. I thought he had the crowd hypnotized the whole night. He just stands there and sings. He doesn't run around or do any dancing. He sings, that's what he's there for and he sings it like he's really meaning every word he's singing.

It was just great.

He's gonna tour in USA later this year, I suggest you go check him out. This guy can sing live, not just on the album.? ok

I was thinking about buying this cd, but I'm just wondering if it's as good as "Here Comes That Weird Chill" If it is, I'm definitely gonna go pick it up.

It is. It might not be as "weird" since the tracks on that EP didn't "fit" on "Bubblegum".

It's a mix of everything from slow ballads to fast more traditional rock songs.  ok

I've got Field Songs and Here Comes That Weird Chill. Both excellent. I really should get a hold of Bubblegum. I think my brother has it. I must go round and borrow it. It looks like he is doing quite a tour at the moment. I wish he would come to Scotland though. I've seen him sing a few times with QOTSA and I though he was great. Looking forward to Bubblegum now. You guys have put me right in the mood for it!

Did anyone read his most recent interview in Kerrang? They didn't come right out and say it, but they hinted at the possibility that Mark Lanegan was back on the H. He was feeling ill during the interview and blamed it on some chocolate he ate. I think Kerrang ended the article with something like, 'Chocolate kids, just say no.'

You could get the "Here Comes That Weird Chill" EP and "Field Songs". That way you're working your way back during the years. Smiley

He hasn't released that many solo albums:

Bubblegum [2004]
Here Comes That Weird Chill [EP] [2003]
Field Songs [2001]
I'll Take Care Of You [1999]
Scraps At Midnight [1998]
Whiskey For The Holy Ghost [1994]
The Winding Sheet [1990]

Saw Lanegan at the Islington Academy last night. A really nice venue for this kind of show.

This gig got KKKK (out of 5 possible K's) in this week's edition of Kerrang. I thought you may be interested to read about it. I'll transcribe:

For a man whose voice alone sounds like it was fashioned from oak cask soaked rotten from the sting of centuries-old bourbon, you can't help but feel what a peculiar choice of title 'Bubblegum' was for MArk Lanegan's latest album. Nothing this lone ranger of the broken heart and shattered soul has ever put his name to has remotely resembled the disposable, and watching him tonight, shadowed from the spotlightson some dark road to redemtion, the contrast seems more apparent.

Still,? the record does mark something of a departure, and with half the set given over to the new material, it's evident that Lanegan's tenure in QOTSA has upped the rock quotient considerably. And it's not just on current cuts like the fuzz-heavy 'Hit The City' or the driving 'Sideways in Reverse' - his earlier folk-blues outing? (try the fragile 'Resurrection Song') haunt the air with a greater weight tonight as well. Although for sheer amped magnificence, nothing beats the finale of 'Fix' as it explodes into an extended whiteout of blistering feedback.

A beautifully strong return.

hey - thanks for the link.  At first I didnt like the song, but now I cant stop listening to it.  The part where he repeats 'going down, going down, people give me your love' is stuck in my head!

Some of these posts say that Izzy & Duff worked on the album.  How did Mark Lanegan become friends with them?

I don't know how exactly, but Duff has worked with him before. I think Mark lived at Duff's house in Seattle or something like that.

Maybe Izzy was introduced to him by Duff.

BLENDER >> OCTOBER 2004 Issue 30
THE GUIDE NEW RELEASES[/b]

MARK LANEGAN BAND
BUBBLEGUM? ? * * * * (Four stars = GREAT. CHECK IT OUT)
BEGGARS BANQUET
On sixth album, former Queens of the Stone Age singer celebrates famous friends, alcohol
For 20 years, Mark Lanegan has lent his low, meaningful growl to balls-out rock monsters the Screaming Trees and, later, Queens of the Stone Age. All the while, he?s had extracurricular angst to spare, kicking out five solo albums: 2001's potent but sketchy Field Songs was the last. A full-time solo artist since QOTSA?s implosion earlier this year, Lanegan has finally produced his long-threatened masterpiece. Bubblegum is a keg party thrown for close friends who share at least one deep bond: rehab. Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan of G?N?R and Velvet Revolver fame add muscle to "Strange Religion," while former QOTSA mucker Josh Homme lends his knowledge of sadness and pills to "Methamphetamine Blues." But it?s Lanegan?s duets with PJ Harvey - "Hit the City," and the high moisture content booty call "Come to Me" - that really make this set essential.
