Richard Fortus (GUNS N' ROSES), Rob "Blasko" Nicholson (OZZY OSBOURNE), Shawn "Clown" Crahan (SLIPKNOT), Richard Patrick (FILTER), Stephen Perkins (JANE'S ADDICTION), Ray Luzier (ARMY OF ANYONE, KORN) and Tommy Clufetos (ROB ZOMBIE) are among the musicians that were enlisted to record music for the "Repo! The Genetic Opera" soundtrack. Principal photography for the film was completed last month in Toronto, Canada. The film was produced by Daniel Heffner, Carl Mazzocone, Mark Burg and Oren Koules.

The film was directed by Darren Bousman, a longtime member of the Twisted Pictures and Lionsgate families, having directed the past three installments of the wildly successful "Saw" franchise, including the recent smash hit "Saw IV". Terrence Zdunich and Darren Smith, co-creators of the original New York and Los Angeles stage production upon which the film is based, wrote the film's screenplay, music and lyrics.

Prior to the shoot, a two-month recording of the film's soundtrack and score took place at Extasy Studios in Los Angeles. Japanese musician and composer Yoshiki Haysahi (better known simply as Yoshiki) from the legendary rock band X JAPAN produced the music together with Joe Bishara. Executive Producer Jonathan McHugh, also served as the music supervisor. "This is by far the most ambitious and unique project I've ever worked on," raved McHugh. "The amalgamation of musical genres from pop to heavy metal and rap, to name just a few, really blends together to create one of the most diverse soundtracks in movie history and is destined to modernize the 'rock opera' in a big way."

From the press release:

An all-star assemblage of songs will make up the soundtrack.  Among the
musicians featured are Richard Patrick (Filter), Steven Perkins (Jane's
Addiction), Clown (Slipknot), Ray Luzier (Army of Anyone), Brian Young (David
Lee Roth's band), Richard Fortus (Guns & Roses), Sonny Moore (First to Last),
David J (Bauhaus/Love & Rockets), Daniel Ash (Love & Rockets), Blasko (Ozzy
Osborne), Tommy Clefetus (Rob Zombie's band), Melora Creager (Rasputina).
Also lending her voice to the soundtrack is the edgy pop star Poe.

"We've been fans of many of these bands for a long time and it was a dream
come true to assemble such an all-star roster of musicians," exclaimed Burg
and Koules.  "They really hit all the right notes in bringing the bizarre
fantasy world of the film to life.

Yeah really, Richard doesn't really get alot of respect on other forums. I love the guy and am really glad he's in GNR. I'll be glad to check out this material.

Richard is AWESOME!!! headbanger

I remember being torn before the tour started in 2006 when the rumors were going around about Izzy being part of the shows.? I thought that, as great as that would be, that spot now belonged to Richard so maybe Izzy needed to stand down.? But after watching them perform together (on the boots), it was obvious that both men were very secure with their own and the other person's role.? There didn't appear to be any ego or animosity or jealousy issues.? On the contrary, they seemed to really enjoy the entire experience and both men shined individually and together.

Agreed. I feel the same way about Izzy. I dig his history and place in GNR, but I'm glad he and Richard can co-exist without any crap flying.  I've only seen it on boots like you have, but it'll be cool to see if it happens again and I can be there for it.

I constantly hear people saying how they think the movie looks crappy and such..I for one have to admit watching it over and over, and that song just doesn't leave my head...I kinda like it!

As for Richard being on the soundtrack, I like how he's working on all these different sorts of things all the time  ok

A Richard mention in the Boston Globe today about a GNR Tribute Band call Mr. Brownstone...

It is not clear whether the real Guns N' Roses knows about Mr. Brownstone, though the imitators say they met Gunner Richard Fortus after a show at the Bowery Ballroom in New York a few years ago. Fortus told them that he had called singer Axl Rose, who was at a hockey game, from the gig and held up his cellphone. (Fortus, in an e-mail, confirmed seeing the band: "I seem to remember lots o' wigs.") hihi

First Full Trailer for Darren Lynn Bousman's Repo! The Genetic Opera

June 27, 2008

The first official trailer for Darren Lynn Bousman's rock opera titled Repo! The Genetic Opera has finally arrived. The last time we showed you anything from this it was a teaser in October last year. I must admit that this new trailer looks awesome, just plain badass. I've got a good feeling that they've spent the last 8 months beefing this thing up with some visual effects and incredible music and now it looks top notch. I love the comic book style imagery and dark operatic feel to it. I am really, really liking this so far and I do think it might be an instant cult classic. I'm just genuinely excited to see this and I'm still holding my breath hoping it's not pure crap. With this trailer, Repo! The Genetic Opera finally looks awesome!

For more info, you can check out the official website for the film here: repo-opera.com.

Repo The Genetic Opera! is directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, of Saw II, III, and IV, and is written by first-time writers Darren Smith and Terrance Zdunich. The film stars Alexa Vega, Paul Sorvino, Paris Hilton, Nivek Ogre, and Sarah Brightman and features musical contributions from Richard Patrick (Filter), Steven Perkins (Jane's Addiction), Clown (Slipknot), Richard Fortus (Guns & Roses), Sonny Moore (First to Last), Blasko (Ozzy Osbourne), and Tommy Clefetus (Rob Zombie). Repo! The Genetic Opera is currently set to arrive in theaters on August 8th, but that date can change at any moment.

Review: REPO! Soundtrack

And here we are, music from the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack of REPO! is here. It includes ?Night Surgeon?, ?Legal Assassin?, ?Choice?, ?Come Up and Try My New Parts?, ?21st Century Cure?, ?But This Is Opera!? and ?Chase the Morning?. All available through digital download at Amazon.com, iTunes and anywhere else you may want to purchase your music.

The complete soundtrack will be available sometime mid-October at conventions, signings, and through the films official website at www.repo-opera.com. And with the soundtrack, perhaps the film itself will get some respect from Lionsgate. The reason? it looks absolutely fascinating. It is strange how it is the exact dreamscape Darren had described before, yet I think it may be far from crazy? possibly even brilliant?

Repo! The Genetic Opera is a live wire of sound. Music that is encapsulated by a hyper-mix of beats and electric pulses. It feels at one moment like something Marilyn Manson should be hissing at you, it then transforms into a kind of operatic beauty with Sarah Brightman?s vocal abilities. It even delves into a couple of punk pop delicacies with songs like the brash and bratty, ?Seventeen? and the lamenting ?I Didn?t Know I?d Love You This Much?. Some of the soundtrack even includes the underrated musical talent of Poe. I?m sure that was inspired by her elegant and ghostly track ?Haunted? on her album with the same name. Other contributors to the music itself include Richard Patrick from Filter, Richard Fortus from Guns & Roses, and Melora Creager from Rasputina.

In fact, the key to a good soundtrack is its ability to create interest in the film it is from. And Repo! The Genetic Opera certainly has made me very interested in seeing Darren?s latest come to bloody life. The only major downside is that I know exactly how the film ends. Even still, I highly recommend the surprisingly powerful music of Repo!

My rating 3.5/4
