What'd you think of it?

I've only read Book 1, and so far it's pretty diehard.

Well, it only gets worse. But it's good!, I liked it. Because I'd read it before, and it only made up a part of the module (Truth and Knowledge Among the Greeks, if you're interested), I didn't bother to reread it last year... I probably should have done, but I could recall enough to squeeze me through.

And anyway, the literature that surrounds it can be just as interesting, so that sorted me right out. As elitist as it can be, it's never less than fascinating.* Parts of it do bother some people, but hey, we all feel elitist at times... Right? Either way, I enjoyed it!

*Well... That's not strictly true. At times, it did bore me to tears, and as with all philosophy lose the thread and carry on reading at your peril!, you may as well have it upside down if you do, same good it will do you. But those bits are more than made up for by the gold. (Pun not intended!, noted, and left in anyway)

His last book "Duma Key" Was phenomenal. I know he got a lot of flack for "The Cell" and "Lisey's Story" but Duma was an excellent, amazing read.

i just read a bunch of Stephen King books, Duma Key, which was good, The Shining and The Stand. The Stand was pretty fucking cool. I also read "cell" and i thouight it was good, nothing special but not was bad as people said it was.

THe Tommyknockers is also pretty cool but it takes a while to take off, but once it does its pretty gripping.

i'm really really looking forward to the new Dennis Lehane novel which is a historical epic about the boston police strike in 1918, "The Given Day" which comes out tuesday.

Lehane 's "Mystic River" is my favorite book ever. and his Kenzie-Gennaro detective series was fantastic

I liked The Stand, but the middle part bored me, and it was too long.

Check out Salem's Lot and Pet Sematary if you haven't read them.

I read The Stand about 17 years ago, it was long, but very good read.

The Dirt is in my bathroom, reading parts of it at a time - amazing shit Motley went thru back in the day, much of it self inflicted. Oh the hedonism..... ok

I have read quite a lot since I last visited this forum.

The Count of Monte Cristo - Great, the revenge plot is just pure ownage.
Crime and Punishment - Very intense, Raskolnikov is an interesting character.
Good Omens - Satire at it's finest, what else would you expect from Pratchett and Gaiman?
Old Man and the sea - Short and sweet.
Of Mice and men - see above
Dracula - Very good.
Frankenstein - Totally different from the cliche hollywood version. Ofcourse better.
Paradise Lost - Genius, Lucifer was a HERO! This would make a kick ass movie.
Last 4 of The dark tower series. - Second half of the saga was a bit weaker than the first, ending was cool though.
Pride and Prejudice - Read it out of interest, not bad, but didn't get it why it's so popular. Maybe coz I'm a guy.
Picture of Dorian Gray - Okay I guess.
Interesting Times - Everything by Pratchett is awesome.
It - Great stuff, Pennywise is cool, too bad he doesn't do pencil tricks! Ending was kinda meh though.
Animal Farm - Great.
The Stand - Great, would have loved to see a bit more Flagg in action!

I liked The Stand, but the middle part bored me, and it was too long.

I've never cared too much for Pet Semetary, but Salem's Lot is a great book. I've always considered The Shining to be King's scariest novel. The Stand is also one of my favorites, along with It.

My english professor gave me several books she wanted me to read over the summer, and most of them were awesome.

The Grapes of Wrath: Amazing, amazing novel, one of my all-time favorites now. Very depressing story, but Steinbeck was an amazing writer, and I think he's under-appreciated.

Invisible Man: Totally not what I thought it was going to be (I figured it was about an actual invisible man, but that's the H.G. Wells' story, not Ralph Ellison's). Interesting book, great writing, but I was ready for it to end; the second half isn't on the same level as the first.

Crime and Punishment: Another amazing novel; incredibly heavy and deep. It's like a philosophy book and a crime/suspense novel in one. I loved it; the book depressed the hell out of me and put me in a dark, somber mood, but the ending offers a bit of light at the end of the tunnel. Without a doubt one of the greatest novels ever written.

David Copperfield: My first ever encounter with Charles Dickens. The book is friggen' huge, and I figured it'd be boring as heck and take me forever to finish, but surprisingly it kept my interest throughout. I actually finished it relatively fast, and was a bit sad to have to say goodbye to all the characters. It's basically a fictional autobiography with tons of twists and turns. It made me want to read more of Dickens.

Other Voices, Other Rooms: Truman Capote's first novel. I didn't much care for it. I think it relies too much on symbolism. But at least it was short.

Mysteries of Pittsburgh: I'd never even heard of Michael Chabon before I read this book, but the dude's an incredible writer. He has an amazing way with words and figurative language. The plots drags a bit at times, but definitely picks up near the end. Very fascinating, eye-opening novel. Kind of a bisexual-coming-of-age story.

On the Road: After reading this I wanted to go out and hitchhike across the country and adopt the same lifestyle as these guys. I definitely understand why this book has been so influential. Kerouac's spontaneous prose is a bit hit-and-miss-- but there are numerous passages that are beautifully written. Anyone that has a bit of a "free spirit" should definitely read this American classic.
