SLAM DUNK!!!

« Reply #20 on: December 05, 2007, 07:42:56 PM »

Tommy is pretty well respected in the music industry.   Axl is lucky to have someone like Tommy.

Axl is lucky to have Tommy??? LOL  Tommy should be thanking God and all his stars to have Axl.
The reason there's never any Duff vs Tommy threads is because TOMMY STINSON IS A LEGEND in the music industry!!! headbanger

who is talkin about a Duff?? do you want to start a thread Duff vs. Tommy?  'cause I DON'T.  Tommy is a legend in what music industry? ganster rappers?Who cares!??  rofl  I have NOTHING against him at all, I think he is a pretty good bass player and I give him the credit for sticking around with Axl & Co.that's it!  But names like: John Paul Jones, Geezer Buttler, Steve Harris, Cliff Burton, John Deacon ARE LEGENDS.  Wink
As cool as Duff is, he's just not in the same league as Tommy credibility wise in the music industry.

That LEGENDS list should read more like this:
John Paul Jones, Geezer Butler, TOMMY STINSON, John Deacon, Cliff Burton, DUFF MCKAGAN, Steve Harris.

Duff is the former bassist of Guns N' Roses..

As big as The Replacements were, they were never the biggest band on the planet.

Duff owns Stinson

Like I said

Is Duff playing tommy's bass lines?

NOPE

Tommy I believe is playing Duff's and making a living currently doing Duff's music.

Duff has some of the greatest bass lines in rock history and in my opinion is a better songwriter

Did Stinson ever write an "Its So Easy "

nope D, Im gonna go right ahead and guess that it was.....DUFF!...right? Wink

Stinson a legend? if he hadn't ever played with Axl, I wouldn't have known who the guy was..
if he was such a legend, he wouldn't have had to sell ink toner to survive before Axl gave him a ring, he would have been playing with a shitload of other musicians, or another band, making a good living.
but anyway, he's a good musician. Im glad he's playing with Axl and I like his solo album.

tommy is great, but he never got the general public appreciation Duff had in Guns.

The replacements were a great band, Tommy's solo music is awesome, he's a talented musician, but not a legend.

he is in my book, but that doesn't count for much.

As someone said he had to sell printing toners for a living after the replacements ended... i don't think duff ever had to do that.

Tommy is great though. i prefer him over duff any day. and his cds mean a lot to me.

I can't stand duff's solo crap. those are just a waste of time... Tommy on the other hand writes music that has soul, feeling and great composition. he's the better musician in my book.

wow ... It's really sad how some of youze seem to have such a limited appetite for music.? no

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX, PEOPLES ... DON'T LET COMMERCIALISM DICTATE YOUR TASTES.
THERE'S A WHOLE WORLD OF REALLY GREAT MUSIC BEYOND THE 'TOP TEN' ON THE SALES CHARTS.

No offense to Duff but if it wasn't for his time in GNR most of youze would have ZERO clue who he is.
And considering Duff's Seattle music background, Tommy was probably one of his influences.

Tommy Stinson is not only one of the most RESPECTED talents in the music industry, he's a LEGENDARY bass player and a garage punk ICON!!! headbanger

^Most respected talents in the music industry according to whom?  you? and/or the hard core GN'R fans, who else?
as I said before I like him but I think calling him a "LEGENDARY" bass player is a bit too overrated.  garage punk icon?Huh  rofl so is the guy in Blink 182, right?  Roll Eyes

I disagree completely.

Duff is not in Tommy's league as a songwriter.  It's not even close.  You only need to compare Tommy's solo work to Duff's to know that.

While Tommy may not be a legend like Duff that has more to do with popularity of the bands they were in, not talent.

Tommy played on a lot of great Replacements records and his solo record is fantastic.

Duff may be a better bass player, but Tommy has done much, much more than just play Duff's bass lines.

Tommy is a very gifted musician.  He's the Izzy of the new band, in my opinion.

I never said he wasn't a respected musician, I dont agree with one of the "most respected" ones,
fine, that's your opinion, I have mine as well, I dont think he is one of the " most " on anything really...and I dont care what Puffy think anyway.  ok

Ah, what do you know?  Duff ripped off most of his stuff from the Pistols.

Thanks for playing.

Ali, I agree with everything you said but this:

I know you said "may be", but as musician, I think Tommy is way better than Duff. Just listen to Somethings Wrong on VGH. Smiley

I agree, overall, Tommy is a better musician.  I think he has a better voice than Duff and is a much, much better songwriter.  I want to hear Tommy play on the more aggressive new GN'R songs before having definitive word on who the better bass player is.

Voodoo, not sure on who has better chops, but Duff's tone is fucking killer.  It helped, like Slash's tone, make that GNR sound!!

Well, it's a matter of opinion, but I don't like that bass with chorus he used on UYI tour and I don't miss that at all.

I think Tommy's tone is more smooth, more natural and less "metallic". But each to their own.

Definitely, everyone in GN'R helped make the GN'R sound.

Pure bass playing?  That will be easier to say after Chinese Democracy is out, I think.  But, I truly believe that Duff is not in Tommy's league overall as musician, including bass playing, music writing, melody writing, lyric writing, playing other instruments (guitar, drums), and singing.

No offense to Duff but if it wasn't for his time in GNR most of youze would have ZERO clue who he is.

He was in the band and made himself famous. If it wasn't for for Guns n Roses most of youze would have ZERO clue who Axl is. If Tommy Stinson wouldn't have played with The Replacements most of youze would have ZERO clue who Tommy is and if Guns n Roses had not excist with Duff and the gang, Tommy wouldn't be playing in the band now. Your comment is useless!
