The Eagles Farewell I Tour: Live From Melbourne is the biggest selling DVD in most parts of the world this week. Already in the USA it has been certified 9x platinum and in Australia, after just one week, it is 3x platinum.

Glenn Frey from The Eagles spoke with Undercover to pass on his thoughts on Farewell 1 to you.

Paul Cashmere: I think I'll call this Greetings 1 Interview: Live From Melbourne.
Glenn Frey: There you go, Interview 1.

PC: I liked the title Farewell 1 but a lot of people missed the joke.
GF: I think so. But, some people (laughs), they just don't get a joke. Gosh, there's been so many people like Cher who say "this is the last time ever I am going to tour anywhere" and a year later there they are again. "Last time only, honest, really". We thought it was good to poke a little fun at ourselves and the farewell, last show phenomena.

PC: On the DVD itself, you poke some fun at the song-titles as well. (Life In The Fat Lane, The Long Walk, I Can't Remember Why).
GF: You have got to make it fun.

PC: Have people come to you over the years and given you gag lines about Eagles song-titles?
GF: We've been doing this for so long. Basically, you are just up on stage and all of a sudden strange thoughts will enter your head and you go "God, I can't believe that" or "That's funny, maybe I should say something about that". It's good to make a few jokes during the show. You don't want to be too serious. It is a music concert after all.

PC: Let's talk about the new songs. 'No More Cloudy Days' which was your song and Joe's 'One Day At A Time' which were debuted on this tour. How many new songs were short-listed?
GF: That was it (laughs). Joe wasn't finished with his. It was quite a ways along when we decided we said we should do a couple of new songs if we are going to film our show. It just happened that my song was finished. I was kind of holding on to it. I always thought it was an Eagles song. That one was an easy choice. Joe and I got in the studio and we worked on it for about three or four days. He finished that up. The songs that were finished, we went for things that were slightly more up-tempo. We wanted an up-tempo song from Joe because our show is full of ballads. We've got plenty of ballads. That was part of our thinking as well.

PC: When did you write 'No More Cloudy Days'?
GF: I wrote that after I listened to David Gray's album, the album that had 'Babylon' on. It was the first big album for him. I was listening to that song and just started thinking about that kind of style. He was a little bit of the inspiration for that tune?

PC: Do you have studio versions of your song and Joe's song?
GF: Yes we do.

PC: What are the plans for release?
GF: Right now we are just going to keep them in the lead box. I guess the best thing would be to get about 10 more new Eagles songs and then we would have an album. We don't have any plan right now to release one. We did release the live version of 'No More Cloudy Days' to American radio and they took to it quite well. It is being played on a lot of stations. It has only been out for about four weeks. It has been getting a lot of airplay so maybe they will think to release the live version in other countries. I think it would be a good promotional tool for the DVD and it is also nice to hear new Eagles music on the radio.

PC: Can you put a timeline on when we should expect the next Eagles studio album?
GF: Oh no. Oh God. We don't even know if we are going to do it. It is so hard for us to set aside the amount of time that it takes to make a full album. What we are doing, we are going to play in California in a couple of weeks. We are going to play every major city in California, including the little ones too. This California tour is going to go on for about three months. Shortly after Thanksgiving, we are probably going to finish up in Honolulu with some shows in Hawaii. Then we are done for a while. We are going to take a nice long break. I am going to guess that sometime around the middle of February we are going to start to talk to each other about what we are going to do.

PC: And then Farewell 2?
GF: I don't see us touring for a while now. We have toured almost everywhere. We may just cool our heels for a little while. These are things that we are going to discuss. We do the Eagles about a year at a time. We got smart ? finally. Don't try and plan too far ahead. Be pragmatic. Make sure that there is time off when there needs to be time off. You've got to work but you can't work so much that it's not fun. Every year we sort of set ourselves up that way. We did something in the early part of 2002-2003. There are some tracks that exist and obviously the Joe Walsh track was something that came out of that period of time. We will just wait until next year. We can really get into trouble saying we are going to do stuff and then not being able to do it. I don't want to start falsely building up people's hopes for an Eagles studio album because I'm really not sure that that is going to happen. It would be nice but there are a lot of things involved. Everybody in our band has a family that is important to them. There are so many things going on away from the Eagles now that we can't miss out on. People live in different parts of the country. Don Henley lives in Texas. I live in LA. Joe is traveling almost all of the time. He is kind of a gypsy. Timothy Schmidt is way out in the San Fernando Valley. For us to set aside time and all be here for a three week period, it is difficult. Especially when we are touring and we are committing our time away from our family for our touring schedule. Maybe as we cool our touring schedule, maybe there will be some interest to go back into the studio. It is something we are going to talk about after the first of the year and I am certainly not going to make any predictions. Every time I try to predict something about The Eagles I am wrong (laughs).

PC: Well I'll ask you to predict something. When you eventually do get back into the studio to start work on another album, can you see yourself and Don actually collaborating on songs ever again?
GF: We have. 'Hole In The World' was a collaboration and there are many other songs we have worked on. Once a track is started and you have a chorus and verse, you don't even have to be in the same place to work on it. You just have to have the time.

PC: A song like 'The Long Run' is a Henley and Frey song and Don sings that one. 'Lyin' Eyes' is a Henley and Frey song and you sing that one. How do you decide who becomes the lead singer of the song?
GF: Don could sing any song in The Eagles. I wouldn't want to say what songs are appropriate. We can just sort of tell. If it is bluesy it usually a Don song. If it is light it is usually a Timothy song. If it somewhere in the middle, it is usually a Glenn song. We just try and sort of figure those things out. It is pretty obvious. Sometimes it is the guy who started the song.

PC: What about a song like 'Desperado', for instance? That was a Henley and Frey collaboration. In the solo years you both did that one live. It is almost like the divorced couple with the family pet who can't decide who gets the dog.
GF: That song in particular, Don knows I do that song in my solo show. It is a landmark song for us. It's our first really good song. When we decided to first write songs together we wrote 'Tequila Sunrise' and 'Desperado' the first week. That was really the beginning of our partnership. I think 'Desperado' has been sung by so many people. Everybody knows it so I do it in my show.

PC: At the show, 'Lyin Eyes' was dedicated to your ex-wife plaintiff and you credited 'Take It To The Limit' as "the credit card song. That was smart. In a way you acknowledged both women, Glenn.
GF: Listen (laughs). I am just trying to have a few laughs. It is as simple as that. These are the jokes. They never fail to get a laugh. That's why I keep saying it. If people didn't laugh I'd stop saying it. One of them is an old Henny Youngman line. The other one I thought of all by myself.

I saw Don Henley last summer and he put on a great show.  Howver, my dad got the tickets as a retirement gift.  And Eagle's tickets are eve more outrageously priced.  I know they're one of the most successful bands ever, but damn...you gotta draw the line somewhere.

The 2005 edition of the Eagles' extended "resumption" tour finds them digging deeper into the greatest-hits catalog than their first run-through in the '90s.It's telling that the Eagles chose to open their Staples Center set on Saturday night (9/24) with their first three singles in order of release. Since returning to the road in 1994, the band has abstained from committing to recording a new studio album, opting instead to re-package their hits in new CD compilations and live DVD releases.

What they delivered on Saturday was a carefully crafted recital of much of their best group and solo work from the '70s and '80s. And recital versus performance is a key distinction, because the show seemed to sacrifice some of the passion and joy of their '90s outings in favor of sheer precision in replicating their studio sound.

A noteworthy lineup change this time around is the addition of guitar wizard Stuert Smith--a longtime, top-shelf session and tour player in the country and alt-country scenes--to replace departed axe slinger Don Felder. Where Felder felt the confidence to embellish a bit in spots, Smith opts for a note-perfect mirror image of the original track, and appeared to be having the most fun onstage as well.

This time out, the band is also using a horn section, which made its strongest impact at the end of the first set, when it fleshed out "Boys of Summer," "In The City" and "The Long Run" with some solid arrangements (the 28-song show was broken into two sets with a roughly 20-minute intermission).

Vocally, the band was in fine form. Don Henley's voice is seasoning with age into an even more soulful instrument than his first two solo albums promised. Glenn Frey can still hit all his vocal marks, though bassist Timothy B. Schmit did seem to show a little strain on his showcase "I Can't Tell You Why." Guitarist and vocalist Joe Walsh is maybe a little more pitch-challenged than past decades, but brings some important guitar chops to the proceedings.

Ten years into what Schmit has referred to as the band's "resumption" (as opposed to reunion), the dynamic seems to have settled into a focus on delivering the '70s hits more than exploring the creative possibilities of the group. The twinkle of hope for solid new material that was sparked by 1994's "Get Over It," "Love Will Keep Us Alive" and "The Girl From Yesterday" from the "Hell Freezes Over" tour has faded pretty completely, given the relative weakness of this tour's new selections--"One Day At A Time," "No More Cloudy Days" and the band's post-9/11 single, "Hole In The World."

The fact that the band can support 10 nights in the Los Angeles market with a hits showcase indicates there's clearly a market for the nostalgia play. Since re-emerging in 1994, the Eagles concert concept has essentially become a brand: a dependable, solid show for those needing a live fix of baby-boomer hits.

Watching the Eagles play a near-perfect set at San Jose's HP Pavilion for almost three hours Monday night was like watching the New York Yankees play baseball. No, not the already gone 2005 team.

As it artfully, and at times mechanically, unfurled 29 songs, every one a classic rock hit, this band of almost four decades was like the Yanks of yore, a team that was like an all-star team, inevitably marching to championships.

The Eagles sang as well as they ever did and played the tried-and-true hits almost meticulously, sometimes exactly like the recorded versions and occasionally sneaking in a minor change.

At times it was almost too formulaic. You wondered how they could play the same songs the same way night after night. But it was hard not to be amazed at a monolithic career that includes a greatest-hits album that is the biggest seller in music history, as they rolled off most of those hits.

If the Eagles were a baseball team, Don Henley and Glenn Frey alone would be championship caliber. They opened with three songs from their first album, which dominated the airwaves in the '70s: ``Take it Easy,'' ``Witchy Woman'' and ``Peaceful Easy Feeling.''

Then, you have to add in free agent Joe Walsh, who, in the midst of a brilliant solo career, was picked up for his screwball antics and still-edgy rock songs that can bring an arena to its feet. And nearly invisible bassist Timothy Schmit, the Eagles' Bucky Dent, the quiet man whose high, true voice framed later career hits, ``I Can't Tell You Why'' and ``Love Will Keep Us Alive.''

The show, which included a 20-minute intermission, was disciplined and radio-friendly at first, and opened up and more rocking at the end.

Henley, looking startlingly like Bill Clinton, was behind the drum kit for much of the first hour, and Frey, who seemed to have escaped aging altogether, was in front. Walsh laid back and strummed chords, while new guitarist Steuart Smith did the heavy lifting, cranking out neat little twists on familiar leads.

They faithfully reproduced all the nuances of happy songs like ``One of These Nights'' and darker ones such as ``The Long Run,'' and Henley's ``The Boys of Summer'' and ``Sunset Grill.'' When Frey wasn't singing lead vocals, his background harmonies -- too easily underestimated -- added depth and beauty.

The latter part of the show was a veritable orchestra of guitars, backed at times by a violinist, two keyboards, four horns and a percussionist, all of them lending voices to the crystalline harmonies.

``Thanks for supporting us for the last two centuries,'' Frey said, exaggerating only a little.

This latest farewell tour, which some would argue started in 1994 as ``Hell Freezes Over,'' is billed as ``The California Tour.'' What made it different from past farewell concerts was a video of the boys in 1978 sailing a boat and playing softball against the staff of Rolling Stone magazine.

There were also a couple of relatively new songs. Henley explained that ``Hole in the World'' was started on Sept. 11, 2001, and finished a year later. It was sung by the entire starting lineup and the bench, mostly a cappella.

And Walsh changed a few lyrics in some songs, adding, ``I watch the Lakers, they stink without Shaq,'' to ``Life's Been Good,'' and ``the bases are loaded and Bush is at bat,'' to ``Rocky Mountain Way.''

You can't help but love someone for changing it up a bit. Word is that Walsh may tour next year with his old band, the James Gang, and that the Eagles may take a long run at a rest.

It's been awhile since these guys put together championship new material. And, like the modern-day Yankees, maybe the Eagles will find some more new hits during the time away from touring.

Or pick up a couple more free agents.
