Not in any real order, and I do like all of these bands (sans #2)
(1) The Smashing Pumpkins. Between 1993 and 1995 they were the hippest, coolest, most popular band on the planet. In 1995 they were like Led Zeppelin, got massive praise and had tons of fans. By 2000, they could barely muster a Gold album.
(2) Limp Bizkit. They not only went from being huge to not having any fans, but the backlash was incredible. Their third album sold a million copies off the bat, and five years later they were dying in clubs. At the moment they are about the least cool band on the planet.
(3) Velvet Revolver. Seems that hype is all this band really had. It's a shame too because their new album (which sold 1/10 of the debut) is a lot stronger.
(4) Van Halen. They lasted 15 years, changed singers, had an unbroken chain of platinum albums and survived grunge only to slit their wrists career wise by dumping Hagar, dumping Roth (after teasing fans with a brief reunion) and then going with Cherone.
(5) Marilyn Manson. In 1996 he was the world's most notorious rock star, by 2000 he was a punchline.

The Pumpkins got screwed when they said Adore was techno/electronic. If they had just called it the Pumpkin's acoustic, it could've sold much much better. then who knows what would've happened.

He doesn't have the star power he once had, but he is still popular. His new album is #1 on the charts, selling a half million off the bat.

I liked everything SP put out, guess I am in the minority- from an analytical standpoint, you could really see their sound progress through their career - unfortunately for them sales did not mirror that.

I think they were an interesting band. The were popular in 1992, the beginning of the end of pop-metal, and the start of the alternative/mainstream era. So I think they were part of both worlds. Pop-metals last hurrah, yet they fit in with the slacker/grunge scene.
I thought their last CD
Motel California
was really good and underrated. It has kind of a Kid Rock/Limp Bizkit feel, and may have done well had it come out in 1999 under a major label instead of 1996 on an indie one.

What's the point to any thread in this section? It's to discuss other bands apart from GN'R and I asked a question. That's the point.

I don't know what it was like in their heyday but sp seems to have good fans like Chad Pennington.
And I don't like VH but aren't they still popular?

I have to mention Soundgarden.
As much as I loved their music, they faded away rather quickly.
