Velvet Revolver to stand in for Van Halen at Hall Of Fame ceremony

03/01/2007 3:00 PM, Yahoo! Music
Lyndsey Parker

Shortly after supposedly reunited Rock And Roll Hame Of Fame inductees Van Halen announced that they'd decided to indefinitely postone their summer 2007 tour with on/off singer David Lee Roth, it has been revealed that hard rock supergroup Velvet Revolver will perform in Van Halen's place at the upcoming Hall Of Fame ceremony.

Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland and guitarist Slash will also speak on Van Halen's behalf, according to LAUNCH Radio Networks. It is still uncertain whether any actual members of Van Halen will attend the induction festivities, which take place March 12 at New York City's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.

While future recording and touring plans for Van Halen remain very much up in the air, Velvet Revolver (whose lineup includes Stone Temple Pilots' Weiland and former Guns N' Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan, and Matt Sorum) have just finished recording their second album, Libertad, and they are slated to tour South America with Aerosmith this April.

Launch Radio Networks reports: VELVET REVOLVER has been tapped for VAN HALEN's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band will perform in VAN HALEN's place, and singer Scott Weiland and guitarist Slash will speak on VAN HALEN's behalf. For now, it doesn't look like David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar will join VELVET REVOLVER onstage, and Michael Anthony hasn't commented yet. It's still unknown whether Eddie and Alex Van Halen will attend the ceremony.

What should be an amazing time for Van Halen - marking their impact on the rock world - will instead be filled by a VR performance?  That's just sad.  I can't think of any other way to say it.

It's going to be the same thing with GN'R's induction as well, probably. Better get used to it.  Wink

Allegedly VR have said they will only perform if Van Halen is there, and it looks like the brothers won't be there.

According to Premiere Radio Networks, all the members of VAN HALEN ? Eddie and Alex Van Halen, David Lee Roth, Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar ? have told the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that they will be attending the induction ceremony on March 12 in New York. Roth, Anthony and Hagar had said from the start that they would be there, and Premiere Radio Networks learned last night (Thursday, March 1) that Eddie and Alex have reserved a table for themselves and their families. However, they will not be performing. VELVET REVOLVER will pay tribute to them, with the band's Scott Weiland and Slash actually inducting them. This marks the second year in a row that one of the inductees, who are all there and accounted for, will not perform. METALLICA paid tribute to a non-performing BLACK SABBATH last year.

For the first time the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be broadcast live on VH1 Classic, and be streamed on AOL without commercials. The ceremony will air on Monday, March 12 at 8:00 p.m. Previous induction ceremonies were only offered on a tape-delay basis on VH1.

This isn't sounding good for a summer reunion with Roth at all-they can't belt out one song? Eddie and Alex talk about how all they do is make music, and yet they have released 3 songs (along with 2 for the porn movie) in 10 years-I'm also tired of hearing the "everyone knows where we are at" bit-why dosen't Eddie just find a singer at this point, he dosen't even have to call it Van Halen-I think he's probably the greatest guitar player I've ever heard, and we never get to hear new music from him anymore-it's just such a waste of talent at this point.

Cmon you really believe Eddie would play with sammy/Mike at RNRHOF?? especially when the new lineup is Dave on vocals/wolfie on bass. Sad he cant put it away for one night and have 2 songs with each singer and mike on bass, but what are ya gonna do??

Why get a new singer?? daves not the problem its Eddies alcoholism. Livenation pulled the tour because they dont want a Drunk eddie playing his own riffs/licks sloppy. They want him to clean up first.

Personally I wish Theyd just get eddie sober, and Record a CD this year and tour in 2008 with new cd/tour. theres already too much bad promo for this to work later in the summer/year

The fact that Ed & Al are showing up is positive. A pathetically small step in the right direction, but positive nonetheless.

March of the Pigs

« Reply #357 on: March 08, 2007, 04:19:59 PM »

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/celebrity/la-et-vanhalen9mar09,1,763856.story?coll=la-celebrity-news

By Geoff Boucher, Los Angeles Times
March 9, 2007

How did that old Van Halen song go? "I found the simple life ain't so
simple ... " The iconic Los Angeles metal band is set to be inducted
into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at a lavish New York banquet
Monday night, but now it appears that only one original member,
bassist Michael Anthony, will even show up.

David Lee Roth, the band's frontman for its first decade, said
Thursday he will not attend the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel ceremony because
event officials have turned down his repeated overtures to perform.

"I don't make speeches for a living; I sing and dance for my dinner,"
Roth said, adding that the decision to skip the event "rips my heart
out."

The hall of fame's event organizers plan for Velvet Revolver to
perform some Van Halen classics, much as Metallica stood in last year
to play Black Sabbath songs while that band's members watched from the
audience. "So it appears this is a television producer's decision,"
Roth said.

The choice of Velvet Revolver was in response to a sticky situation as
far as what lineup of Van Halen could take the stage to perform with
Roth. Van Halen's revered guitar hero, Eddie Van Halen, and his
brother, drummer Alex, had already sent signals that they would not be
in New York. The Van Halens have been in lock-down mode since their
plans for a summer reunion tour with Roth collapsed last month. Roth
said he last spoke to Eddie Van Halen's camp a week ago, and he said
he could not determine the truth about reports that the guitarist is
seeking help for alcohol problems.

"Ed is indisposed and working toward a better future here," Roth said.
"If Ed ever dries up, this is going to be a stadium act, man....
What's happening here with this [New York event] is part and parcel of
the same spiral that screwed up the tour."

Without the Brothers Van Halen, the Hall faced the prospect of putting
Roth on stage with bass player Michael Anthony, who is the lone
founding member expected to attend, and Sammy Hagar, Roth's
replacement in the band and longtime foil, who logged more than a
decade as the band's frontman. Hagar confirmed Thursday he is
attending.

Roth said Thursday he had been preparing since December for the chance
to perform for the industry elite, the media and a television audience
that will be watching the ceremony live on VH1 Classics.

"It's just not an option for me to go and watch some other band - who
are only performing because they have some new record coming out - do
our music," Roth said. "I have nothing against Velvet Revolver - I'm
not familiar with their music - but that was my 3 minutes and 22
seconds up there."

The other inductees this year are R.E.M., Patti Smith, Grandmaster
Flash and the Furious Five, and the Ronettes. The 2007 inductees were
chosen by the 600 voters of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation.
Artists are eligible for inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
25 years after their first recording was released. The ceremony will
also be streamed live on AOL at spinner.aol.com/rockhall.

I would like Van Halen fans to know how much I truly appreciate each and every one of you. Without you there is no Van Halen.

I have always and will always feel a responsibility to give you my best. At the moment I do not feel that I can give you my best. That?s why I have decided to enter a rehabilitation facility to work on myself, so that in the future I can deliver the 110% that I feel I owe you and want to give you.

Some of the issues surrounding the 2007 Van Halen tour are within my ability to change and some are not. As far as my rehab is concerned, it is within my ability to change and change for the better. I want you to know that is exactly what I?m doing, so that I may continue to give you the very best I am capable of.

I look forward to seeing you in the future better than ever and
I thank you with all my heart.

Love,

Ed
