Word is bond, I really really love this new album so far.

Musically it's a close relative of "Fair Warning."  Sure Dave's voice has fallen off a bit, but whose hasn't?

Eddie is on fire!  Oooo-weeeeeeeee!!!!

Really wish rock stars would take better care of their voices, learning to stop singing from the throat goes a long way. For fuck sake opera singers are at their peek when they're in their fifties.

Dave and the whole band for that matter lived and partied really hard, it is an accomplishment for them to even be alive today after what I read in Sammy's book..I think Dave sounds fine on the record, he was never a great singer in the first place, he was/is a great front man

Definitely the best era! Van Hagar sucks...

You should check out The first Album, Van Halen 2 and 1984. They're the best albums in my opinion! beer

I wouldn't say Van Hagar era sucks, as that's the version of the band that I grew up with, and they put out some great music.
It was just different to the tongue in cheek stuff they did with Dave, but they still rocked. They were more of a mature rock band with Sammy as opposed to the party rock with DLR.

I already own VH1, 1984, and a couple of best-of compilations, but the new album has made me go back and check out the Dave era stuff, and I'm really digging it.
Might have to pick up the other DLR era albums I think.

From Sammy Hagar regarding Michael Anthony...

21 February 2012

He never played like this in Van Halen. Eddie [Van Halen] doesn?t even realize what a great bass player he had. I think he never realized it, and that is his complete loss. I remember recording in Van Halen, Eddie was always saying, ?Just play eighth notes.? And he would play all this stuff, and Mike?s just going, ?boom, boom, boom, boom.? Boy, Mike?s really capable of playing more than that, and he never found out. So Mike and I, one time, we?re in Cabo San Lucas when we were in Van Halen ? say probably around ?89, ?88 or ?89, when we were still loving each other, and having a good time ? and Mike was in Cabo jamming and doing a live broadcast from the Cabo Wabo for some album network that I think used to be around that would do live broadcasts. And Ed is listening to it on the radio, and we get back and he asked me who was playing bass? He went, ?Yeah, yeah, you guys did ?Crossroads? by Cream,? and he goes, ?Who was playing f**king bass on that?? I?m saying, ?That?s your brother right over here.? That was Michael Anthony on the bass. And Ed goes, ?Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah?? And then he?d smoke a cigarette, take a hit off a beer and go, ?Hmmm.? But, he didn?t get it, you know?

From the clips Ive seen Eddie is playing at the top of his game and Dave is not stellar but not bad on vocals, but he makes up for it with his stage presence.

And Wolfgang is really good. Al too.

Dave's voice was never that good on live shows, but his studio voice is awesome! He can scream like no other.

In regards to Van Hagar... the reason i don't like it, it's because there's not much songs that really stand out, and it was a completely different attitude to what Van Halen really is and is meant to be.

From David Lee Roth:

Return of Diamond Dave

Van Halen singer erupts with reunited band and first new VH album in 27 years

February 27, 2012

You and Eddie are ultimate definition of ?frenemies.? What?s your take on his playing these days?

We?re doing a lot of tunes that don?t usually get out of the deck and Edward is more lucid now than any time in my memory. I?m his biggest fan. I still remember the first time I saw him playing in a backyard party in Pasadena in high school. He was great then and he?s great now. We?ve come full circle.

How has the pop world changed since you started the band back in 1972?

These days, I see too much cheerleading and not enough stagecraft, and what I?m seeing isn?t worth cheering for. The questions I want to ask most of my colleagues are: Can you even do the whole song from beginning to end? Can you do it onstage like you did it in the studio? Do you float like a butterfly or sting like a pre-recorded bee?

An interview with Sammy Hagar:

When asked about what he thinks about Van Halen touring, he says:

"I think it's the coolest thing that they've done for their fans since the old four reunion with me."

"I don't want to be in that band right now."

I'm a way bigger Van Hagar fan....but I'm about to finally give this album a listen and see if it's any good.

It's hit and miss for me.  It's got some of Ed's best guitar playing on it, but DLR's vocals seem forced at times, and some of the lyrics flat out suck.  And that Frosty song...Fail.

yeah right...

Easily their best album since Six Pack. Sammy would've ruined this with his gay-ass lyrics about cheese. "Oh!"
5/5.

Favorite songs: China Town, As Is, Blood And Fire and You And Your Blues.

Dave's back!

I agree. Check out Sammy's lyrics in Chickenfoot. Flat out awful.

Tattoo is the one I usually skip.

Agreed on both parts, Tattoo is pretty weak compared to the rest of the album.
