Jed Gottlieb of BostonHerald.com recently conducted an interview with DEF LEPPARD vocalist Joe Elliott. An excerpt from the chat follows:

BostonHerald.com: So what specifically makes you so different from GUNS N' ROSES?

Elliott: OK, I'll tell you this. For a long time THE ROLLING STONES had the tag of the most dangerous band in the world, but I've never heard of them going on at midnight. If they were due on at nine, they came on at nine. If you're going to be a dangerous band you don't have to do it like Axl [Rose] did where you piss off as many people as you pleasure. With us it's all about the pleasure. We don't have an agenda and we don't try and court the press to make us look better than we are or worse then we are. We get on with it.

BostonHerald.com: Why don't you get into all the rock star antics that made GN'R so wild?

Elliott: I think that in part it's because were British. There's a romance to a British band that is different than American bands. As dangerous as The Who were, there was still a kind of gentlemanly conduct about them. It was all champagne and cravats even with the cocaine and smashing guitars. Even with [LED] ZEPPELIN there was a mildness to their rape and pillage, as opposed to the ridiculous Hollywood version of the thing in the '80s where it was all bandanas and headbands and everybody pretending to be out of it. We were always in control with our business managers and accountants.

BostonHerald.com: Did you really feel in control when everything got really big with "Pyromania"?

Elliott: Really, the only thing we weren't in control of was how we were going to react to success. We planned in our minds to be the biggest band in the world, that's who we wanted to be. We weren't SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY AND THE ASBURY JUKES. God bless 'em, but we didn't want to be any of those guys. We didn't want to be Commander Cody or Zappa. We were always going to try to be up there with THE BEATLES and the STONES and FLOYDs and THE WHOs of this world.

Read the entire intervire at BostonHerald.com.

i thought a few things that were said were funny so i posted it ok

Yeah I dig Def Leppard too and I don't see what Joe said about Axl as anything too drastic.  A lot of people would disagree with the way Axl has handled certain things over the years.

well i thought that the part where he said something like Axl deliberatly pissing off his fans would a be a good discussion topic. I know he doesn't and that shit happens before a show but still..........

You think that this will spark a debate against the frontmen?

I think Axl could care less what Joe Elliott thinks of him, no offense to Joe. ?A lot of what made GNR so popular and successful was their image. ?Def Leppard was clean cut, GNR was far from it. ?If they pissed off a few people on their way to satisfying thousands of fans, then so be it. ?Just different styles, that's all. ?Both successful bands in their own right.

I like Def Leppard and I really don't have anything against Joe Elliot overall, but lately it seems like he keeps running his mouth. I've seen several stories where he seems angry that Def Leppard are viewed by alot of people as "hair metal". I even saw one where he compared his band to The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. I think I saw an interview with Vivian Campbell where he was running his mouth about Axl pissing people off as well (I could be wrong on that one).

To me, I just wish these guys (well.... every band for that matter) would just let the music do the talking. I mean, who gives a hot fuck what the average fan categorizes your music as?

i respect def leppard very much for there work in the 80s till 1992 and they did have huge success at the time, i just think bad luck, shit albums post adrenalize, and the bassists hair LOL lost them alot of credability.

althought i expect joe and def leppard to get ripped on now, as this is a gnr forum, people should remember the huge success of there 80s albums.

Def Leppard made really good records from High N' Dry to Hysteria but lost their ways after Steven Clark died.  Today Joe Elliot sounds like shit.

He has good nights and bad nights. I saw them about 4 years ago and he sounded TERRIBLE but I saw them about 2 weeks ago and he sounded incredible.

i guess it depends on how long hes been touring, his health, vocal coach, vocal conditions etc.

i mean look at axl 2001, horrible voice, now look at him, very strong voice again.

Yeah, they rocked when they were younger, but now they call themselves a "pop" band.? I used to be a big fan, and still like the older stuff.
