Oh my holy hell! Me and the fam. just got done making homemade salsa. Is cilantro supposed to make you gag? I can't even describe how putrid this fresh stuff smells. Oh well, it wasn't a total waste, my 4 year old who helped put the ingredients together seemed to like it.
Any thoughts on cilantro out there???

Cilantro is one of my favorite things to work with. But you need to be careful how much to use since it is pretty potent. It is great in homemade salsa, but again, watch the quantity you add.

Cilantro is great but yes, it does have a bit of a noxious smell to some. Not me though, I love the stuff. Goes great in salsa, on burritos, on tacos, and my favorite, on banh mi.

Man, you guys are killing me! I want to love the stuff but it almost made me gag. I see that it's an ingredient in a lot of the store-bought salsas I like. I've got 4 big homemade tomatoes, 1/2 a large onion, 3 cloves of garlic, a little salt, a seeded jalapeno, and then maybe 2 pinches of chopped cilantro. Maybe it will blend overnight...hopefully!

No prob Steele. I'll be starting a recipe club for GNR fans soon. We'll reserve our own corner of the floor at various shows and trade recipes during the wait for GNR. Despite my aversion, cilantro recipes will be allowed.
I can't get the damn taste/smell gone! Make it go away!!!!!

You could be genetically predisposed to not like cilantro. Supposedly, there is an enzyme that causes this reaction with certain genetic makeups (just like some people can curl their tongue and some can't). People who think it tastes great look at me as if I'm crazy when I say it has a bitter/metallic taste to it.
You could try using leaves and not the stems (stems have a stronger taste). Fresh usually tastes much stonger than cooked. The store brands that you like may have gone through a cooking or pasteurization process.

That's true. We did a brief study of that in my AP Biology class in high school. There is a gene that will make some people tast things like spinach, brussels sprouts, and broccoli as being very bitter, while others don't notice it (I'm one of the ones who doesn't notice it; hell, I was one of the few five year olds who would eat those things). Perhaps it applies to cilantro too.
And for the recipe club thing, I'm getting a jump on it.
CHIPOTLE SAUCE
12 oz. mayonnaise (light or fat-free mayo should work too)
1/4 to 1/3 cup of milk
7 oz. chipotle peppers in adobo sauce
Whisk together the mayo and milk until the mixture becomes smooth, then mix in the chipotles in adobo. Goes great on fries, burritos, tacos, quesadillas, burgers, or probably almost anything.

Hey Mal, as long as the chick in your avatar is cookin', I'm there!
Bitter and metallic hits it dead on!!!! However, I love cooked broccoli, brussel sprouts, and spinach. Maybe cooked cilantro would be good, and yes, I used fresh so it was particularly potent.
Thanks WOJL.
Now, on a side-note, does anybody else get really foul-smelling urine after eating asparagus??? I heard that's genetically pre-determined too, (at least the ability to smell the specific chemical compound emitted from the urine after eating asparagus that is)

There is an amino acid in aspargus that isn't broken down the same way in everyone.
This was pretty interesting:

I fall into the Pepe Le Pew category. Hmmm, I wonder if he hates the taste of cilantro too?

I love cilantro.
Maybe you put too much in? Maybe it was bad? Maybe you just don't like it?

I'm definitely not a big fan of cilantro/coriander...
But people should try it in California Spring Rolls.
