It is Not a show..
brain plays in the record

System Of A Down frontman Serj Tankian is planning a fall release for his first solo album, "Elect the Dead," telling Billboard.com it's "a rock record, but it's pretty progressive. It's very wide sounding -- lots of different sounding instruments. The excitement I had making this record was the same excitement I had making the first System record."

Tankian will release the "Elect the Dead" on his own Serjical Strike label but partner with an as-yet-unnamed major label for distribution. He says the album is a "very homemade" project, recorded mostly in his own studio in Los Angeles.

He played most of the instruments himself but did get help from SOAD drummer John Dolmayan and former Primus skin-pounder Bryan "Brain" Mantia, along with Dan Monti on guitar and bass, opera singer Ani Maldjian and some string players.

"There's a very classical music vibe to this record, an operatic kind of vibe in a sense," Tankian says. "I'm now looking at whether I should mix it myself or have someone else do it. It's kind of my baby. I've done almost everything from the first piano strike to the last touches. I'm very happy with it. It's a rockin' record."

I had email contact with Brain last week; he said he is taking a break from GNR, that's all. He also mentioned that yes he was recording with Serj, and he also told me he may tour with him, and this may include world dates. I sent some questions to him for my fanzine and I did ask him to clarify his position with GNR, so if there is a response I'll post here.
But he's definitely going to go back to GNR at some point..

i really hope he comes back, but it seems very odd that he is not in the mix now with the tour and hopefully the cd...he said he needed time for his family-no problem...now hes recording and touring with someone else....it doesnt add up. anyone else agree?

If it had mentioned GN'R, it would be posted that he's only using GN'R to promote himself....  Wink

From Blabbermouth:

Tankian plans to issue his debut solo album, titled "Elect The Dead", this fall. The vocalist told Billboard.com that he played most of the instruments himself, but had help from SYSTEM drummer John Dolmayan, former GUNS N' ROSES and PRIMUS drummer Brian "Brain" Mantia and others.

Who knows where that "former" part came from.  Could be from anywhere, not necessarily Brain or anyone associated with GN'R.

A break from what? Canceling dates and not releasing the album?

I hope Brain is not out of GNR, but if he is I hope we are not getting strung along. ( Maybe Brain is stringing along GNR?)

If Frank is the drummer permanently, Id be fine with that also.

This is of course, pure speculation.

According to Stephan Jenkins from Third Eye Bind he is in...mention in this article.

It?s when talking about (and name-dropping) his music legends that Jenkins? quick-tempered personality subsides. Midway through the interview, his Razr rings. As he apologizes, his face begins to light up. ?It?s Bryan, the drummer from Guns ?N Roses!? Says Jenkins excitedly. ?Will you answer my phone if I call you back and not screen my call?? He asks his famous caller. ?K. Brotherhood.?
