i would stick with the black letter as the red would fade over the years.the black will fade too but it will still look better than the red in 20 years time  ok

try that distressed look from the new gnr logo

ie the chinese letters using the colour and style of G&R in this image like all faded and shit...i dunno how it would look but it might be cool peace and have like a faded out black background behind the letters
