I have to ask, as much as I enjoy vr's work why do they always leave off great tunes and put the lower half like she builds quick machines as their single.. I mean out the door, pill demons etc? american man all sound like better tunes to me to grab attention..

I think that question is better asked of their record company.  After all, they're the ones who stand to profit the most from album sales and they're the ones who have the final say on what is released as a single and what isn't.

I just got it off itunes and it is def my favorite VR song. It is absolutely beautiful. From slash's opening licks to weiland's vocals, the song is just brilliant.

It's a nice track, but I think it's hardly the work of monumental genius that this thread has made it out to be.  After all the buildup from you guys, I'm somewhat disappointed.  It's good.  Better than some of what's on the album, for certain.

Would it be too much effort to get a tab up somewhere? I'd love that.

While I think "Messages" is great, I'm glad they left it off the album. While I really like it, it wouldn't have fit the flavor of the album. A lot of times when I hear an import with the "bonus" songs, I get that sense, that the added song has just been tacked on and seems out of place. Now this would be great for a sound-track though, or on a single.

The song is awesome.? ?I worked on playing it.? Took me a while.? but got it.? Its in Standard tuning.? Slash is never in standard. Oh well.

He's always in standard - (well, dropped half a step a lot of the time, maybe that's what you mean?)

It's certainly not a slide tuning or anything, as your comment would suggest.

Anyway, reason I bring this up - why does that deserve an "oh well" ?

It's one of the most beautiful songs I ever heard, scott's voice and slash making the guitar cry like an extention of his heart..

To be honest, i thought alot of you guys were full of shit when i was reading the comments about this song, but now i've heard it and it blew me away, i can't stop listening to it either, it is wicked and Slash's playing is just incredible, so i guess i'm full of shit too Smiley  This song should have been the first single for sure, someone at the record label screwed this one up big time!!!

A ton of contraband is drop D.  Half step down is not standard, it is a half step down.  I wondered if they went back to standard (AC/DC) for Scott's voice?  They went a half step down for Axl's voice.  In the history of recorded albums for Slash, he has always played a half step down.  Standard tuning on record is a new for him.  I think.  I may be wrong.  I said oh well, cause when trying to play it by ear, it fucked me up cause I kept thinking "slash is always a half step down".  So I busted out the capo to figure it out.  Then tuned back up.

I just downloaded it today off i tunes and it is maybe their most powerful song.? ?It is so emotional that it actually gets me teary eyed which is an effect that no song has ever really had on me, and Slash's playing is amazing.? Reminds me of Estranged or something.? I think it was better to leave it off? because it would have had a different effect on the album as someone else stated and be subjected to reviews.? ?I think it stands on its own.? Definatly a nice bonus.
