Flames sign Phaneuf to 6-year extension

The Calgary Flames announced Wednesday that the club has signed defenceman Dion Phaneuf to a six-year contract extension.Sources tell TSN that the deal is worth $6.5 million a season."It remains very important for us to lock up our key young players," said general manager Darryl Sutter in a team statement. "Our goal with Dion was to provide an arrangement that will allow him to take his game to the next level."Phaneuf, Calgary's first pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, is playing in his third season with the Flames.

Blackhawks extinguish the Flames

Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Nikolai Khabibulin made 26 saves as the Chicago Blackhawks downed the Calgary Flames, 3-1, at Pengrowth Saddledome.

Patrick Sharp had a goal and an assist while Duncan Keith and Yanic Perreault each had a goal for the Blackhawks, who snapped a five-game losing streak.

Adrian Aucoin scored the lone goal while Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 25 shots for the Flames, who have lost three of their last four games.

It was a scoreless first period as Calgary had 10 shots on net and Chicago had eight.

The Blackhawks got on the board at the 7:14 mark of the second period as Keith's one-timer from the top of the right circle snuck past Kiprusoff.

The Flames got the goal back with 8:30 left in the second as Aucoin's slap shot at the right point beat Khabibulin cleanly over the glove.

Chicago, though, took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission. Martin Havlat had the puck at the right boards and flicked it to Sharp, who one-timed it from the slot past Kiprusoff for his 25th goal of the season.

Calgary completely outplayed Chicago in the final stanza but was continually frustrated by Khabibulin.

His nicest save of the frame came in the final moments of the game. With Kiprusoff on the bench for the extra attacker, Jarome Iginla threw a shot on net that Khabibulin stopped and he followed up with a pair of saves on the rebound attempts before finally covering the puck with under 30 seconds to play.

Perreault added an empty-net goal in the final seconds of the contest to seal the victory.

Game Notes

Chicago continues its seven-game road trip in Vancouver on Sunday...Calgary hosts Edmonton on Saturday...Neither team scored on the power play with Chicago having five chances and Calgary four.

Hey guys I need a quick question answered.

I am going to my first in person hockey game tomorrow between the Atlanta Thrashers and the Tampa Bay Lightning and I need to know what to wear.

Is it warm in the arena?

I cannot fucking wait.

Ive always heard how awesome hockey games are live and I am excited as hell.

Kovalchuk and Hossa are my fav players a long with St Louis and LeCavalier and I can't wait to watch them.

it's ICE hockey ... think about it   Wink

Unless you're a complete dork, you wear your team's jersey and jeans.

Edited to clarify:  An AUTHENTIC team jersey ... not that replica shit.

Authentic Jerseys cost 300 bucks! Fuck That!

The arenas are usually warm though right and its the rink that is cold??

No.  The arena itself needs to be fairly cool ... I'm guessing like 50?F.

Since you're too cheap to get a jersey, at least wear a sweatshirt in your team's colors.  Just don't tell anyone you're a member of HTGTH or a GNR fan.

You shouldn't make comments about her being a smart ass since you often make that kind of posts yourself.....

You asked a question and somebody who knows the answer replied.

Did you ever see a hockey game on TV?

Maybe there's your answer. You don't often see people dressed up in beach gear at the games....  Tongue

Tonights game was awesome!

I was so close to getting to see a shootout but Zhitnik scored the overtime game winning goal.

Hockey live is amazing.  The Thrashers were playing sloppy as hell and gave the goal away to Tampa as they turned it over in their offensive zone and LeCavalier had an easy one on one with Lehtonen which he buried.

we came back in the third period when Marion Hossa scored a very nice 2 on 1 goal with the assist from Kozlov.

In OT Zhitnik took the puck himself over the blue line, faked a shot, skated around the defender and buried it.

I am definitely goin back. Im thinkin of goin back in March and watching them play Jarome Iginla and Calgary.
Id like to score some tix to watch them play the caps but its on a school night, So I dont know if I want to try and go and get home real late.

Great first experience though, I was already a huge fan but tonight made me even more of a fan.

Wasn't real cold in the arena I wore a Tshirt and a hoodie.

I will also! Hockey jerseys are awesome, they look great, feel great.

I bought tickets to watch them play Calgary March 13th.

Im thinking of buying Season Tickets next season.

I can get two Season Tickets in the 10 dollar seats for 880 dollars.

10 dollars seats are great cause u can still see really well.

I can then pick out 25 games I want to see, sell the other 16 games on Ebay.

I could easily get double the ticket price and pretty much pay for one set of the season tickets.

Senators acquire Stillman, Commodore

he Ottawa Senators have shuffled the deck in a big way by completing a four-player transaction with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Sources say the Senators have acquired defenceman Mike Commodore and forward Cory Stillman in exchange for defenceman Joe Corvo and forward Patrick Eaves.

Commodore and Stillman are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents on July 1. Stillman had to agree to waive his no-trade clause to go to Ottawa.

"We're very happy to address one of our needs, making our defence more mobile and adding a player like Joe that can play on the power play," Rutherford told The Canadian Press. "Also, we view Patrick as a real character player, a real good young player that can fit into our style of play.
