Could someone fill me in on the cultural background/ethnicity of Fats. I was playing some early rock and roll tunes to my distance education students over the telephone today.

My student had a picture of Fats in front of her and was asking if he was African or something. I said, "yes, he is black" but maybe not African American seeing how he is from New Orleans. I mentioned Creole or Cajun but I'm not really sure.

Does anyone know? All, I can find is that he grew up speaking French.

I'm not sure as to the full extent of his cultural heritage, but he was born on February 26, 1928 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
