I still cant understand why SBQM was chosen to be the first single.

Probably because it is catchy, has that awesome bridge where Scott brings it down in the middle of the song, and a killer Slash solo. That seems to me to be a recipe for a top flight single.

If you compare that 21 teaser of SBQM from last month and this... you can see that the AOL stream quality is VERY shitty! The real version will sound MUCH better! 5 hours 'till they put it up on that site to download!

After a disappointing first listen, I went back the the one full song and three snippets and gave them another try.  And, I have to say, most of my concerns still stand.  But I also realized what is really bothering me about these songs.  Within a single track, the instrumental parts are very repetitive...boringly so, in some cases, without a superior vocal performance to distract from the repetition.

So I went back to what I think is the best hard rock record I've ever heard (which just so happens to feature two VR members) are really tried to listen to the instrumental parts.  Now, I don't expect Libertad to be Appetite II or for VR to be GNR II.  But, I gotta tell ya, those Appetite songs are alive...writhing, electric songs, with feeling and emotion.  The stuff I just heard lacks that.  I don't know if it's a song writing problem or a performance problem, but what I've heard so far, in my opinion, isn't even as good as Contraband.

As I said earlier, these samples don't reflect a band that is fully utilizing the talents of its members.  I seem to recall a remark from Scott Weiland that they "made the record he wanted to make."  Maybe that's not such a good thing...

From what they have said in various interviews it sounds like they were purposely going for a little less abrasive in your face sound like Contraband had and more towards a smoother textured layered type sound. You're never going to hear that writhing electric feeling out of any of the guys who recorded Appetite because they are all 40 something millionaires now who aren't living on the streets and just scraping by like they were when they wrote Appetite. They have all moved on now to a more clean and polished sound compared to the gritiness I think you are looking for.

Grittiness is part of it, I think, and I do tend toward bands that have that, but it's more than that.  There's just something missing in the songs, for me.  Then again, I'm not without hope.  After all, it's only one FULL song I've heard (not counting shitty live vids, which I don't rely too much on), and I'm hoping that they didn't put all their BEST material out there so early.  SBQM is catchy, but I rarely find a bands first single to be the true gem of an album, so we'll see.  I'll probably still buy it, and will likely enjoy it.  After all, anything with Slash and Duff is going to be better than most major label releases, these days.

I think Slash's solo's so far are more appetite and early gnr like, but the songs are not as complex as say a welcome to the jungle. ?Though SBQM has a bridge and some different timing, its not as complex. ?That being said, I don't think that is a factor. I like the songs alot. ?If mixed in with CB, you have a great concert. ?9 songs from CB were in your face. ?On Libertad, we will be luck to get 3.

I'm going to go out on a limb here... are these the same speakers that you use to produce your own music?
If so, they're gaining quite the reputation for taking utter shit and making it appear as though it's worth listening to.

We've got quite the split. I'm going to side with those that say it's weak.

I agree.  These songs scream "mailed it in" to me.  She Builds Quick Machines is like they sat down and thought out how to make a corporate rock song.  The only redeeming part is the Slash solo, and Duff's bassline is pretty cool.  There's really nothing else about this song that's memorable or interesting.  The riff is decent.  The lyrics are lame.  The vocals/vocal melodies are boring.  Chorus is annoying.  Kushner is anonymous as usual.  The song itself is unremarkable in basically every way

I agree with your whole post but specially with the text in bold.

I think VR is trying to make corporate rock songs since the first day.

To be honest, I only feel sorry for Slash. I dont care about the rest of the guys anymore (I never cared about Kushner). If I ever buy this album (unlikely at this point), the only reason is gonna be Slash.

It would be very interesting to compare this board's first impressions after listening to the first studio tracks from ''Contraband'' and now.

About the guitars, I dont notice the big step forward due to the new producer.

Maybe tomorrow, with the new high quality clip (the MP3s made with the AOL stream are not the best quality), my impressions may change. I hope so.

I hated CB the first 3 listens in but now its one of my Fav albums.

So never judge something that u hav eonly heard a couple times.

Also this music is meant to be cranked the fuck up to 10, so u gotta take that into consideration as well.

I guarantee riding down the freeway doing 80 with this shit pumped up full of blast would rock your fucking ass off. ok

The thing that I'm still trying to understand is why Slash decided to kick Josh Todd and Keith Nelson out of the group.  Their style is much more in tune with the ex-Guns background.  They had recorded 10 songs and then Slash just kicked them out of the band without any explanation.  IMO 15 is a better album than Contraband, more replay value, not to mention the self-titled Buckcherry album which is better than 15.  Slash kicked those guys out of the band to make songs like THIS?  It's hard for me to understand
