My opinion about the tracks:

01) ''She Build Quick Machines'' has a catchy and ''poppy'' chorus, and that's it. It has an innecesary long ''slow'' part, which is very boring in my opinion. The Slash solo is decent... but if I were told that Slash recorded that solo in 1987, I'll believe it. Nothing interesting in this song IMHO.

02) ''Last Fight'': It's chorus remembers me intensely of another song that I cant remember. I'm sure I've heard those melodies before, at the point that I was anticipating what was following in the song. Cool song, not bad at all, but I expect a lot more from Weiland/Slash.

03) ''Spay'' the strongest track of the four, and the only one that left me desiring the full version. Very cool Slash solo, great vocal parts by Weiland, and this is probably the song that is closer to the ''Contraband'' sound of all the four. From what I could heard, this song is promising and could be a good choice for the second single.

04) ''She Mine'' is probably the worst piece of shit I've ever heard from Slash/Weiland. Maybe I should wait to hear the full lenght track, but this sample is terrible in my opinion. That 8/10 second Slash solo is very weak, 8/10 seconds ''wasted'' in the track, and I didnt like at all the voice that Weiland used at the end of the sample. It reminds me of ''Babasonicos'', the biggest pop/gay/teen icon in argentine/latinamerican music.

Now I need a full lenght version of ''Spay'' to blast my speakers. Very cool track, very promising? ok

I agree about Spay!  Everyone is dogging this song, but I like it.  Reminds me of Spectical a little in the attitude department.  The music is a mix between Bad Obsession and Perfect Crime.  Well kind of anyway.

SBQM has all the elements of a hit single, and it will likely do awesome for the band as Slither did. I am sure they will be quite happy with it even though you think it is weak.

It's still really interesting to see such differeing opionions here.
I've heard a live boot of She Mine and I really dig it, it has a bit of an AIC vibe to the chorus. And Spay has been written off by some people, while others love it.

It at least shows there's a bit of diversity amongst the new tracks.

i really like The Last Fight and She Mine.

She Builds Quick Machines has NOTHING on Slither.

that being said its decent. pretty catchy, but nothing special. it'll do fine as a single.

also these songs at least prove they have evolved and moved away from Contraband. thank god for that.

Like that was such a huge feat in 2004. Realistically, what other rock songs were there then? None that were very memorable.

Unlike 2007 which is just filled with great new music:

Exactly, they should have no problem getting a "hit" amongst this crowd. They should be so proud that they are competing with those other 'bands".  Roll Eyes

My point is that we are all sometimes quick to label something boring, mediocre, forgettable and whatnot when in reality we just don't always know how things will be received. When people heard Slither was going to be the single some were quick to dismiss it based on the idea of it being mediocre based on the El Rey performance. No one at the time would probably have believed the song would help propel them to a triple platinum album and a Grammy.

The moral of the story is we just don't know how something will be received by the general public. We live in an insulated world on these message boards in terms of our perspective, so just because we may deem something as forgettable, average, mediocre, or boring.

SBQM is such a weak first single.

That's yet to be seen.

Smart money says American modern rock radio will take it and run with it, time will tell if it has the resonance of "Slither".

? is that seriously the best they can do?

Beyond a goofy selection for a 3rd single from Contraband (DLT), VR, management and label have done nearly everything perfect as far as strategy's concerned.

I see no reason to not trust them here, they've earned the courtesy via track record.

That statement can and should apply to all band releasing or trying to release new music.

I couldn't agree more. This song will be a homerun on modern rock radio as it rocks, has that awesome bridge, and a killer Slash solo. Throw in the fact the label seems highly committed to helping them get media exposure and airplay and the formula screams radio hit. They will follow it up with Last Fight which will also be a major hit (as it will follow the FTP course) and if they don't screw the 3rd single up again they might have a monster album on their hands.

The first time I've heard ''Slither'' I was really shocked. Slash guitars were killer, the track sounded like a 4 minute hard rock lesson and I was absolutely happy with it being first single.

Now I dont feel anything like that. None of this tracks sounds as hard as slither, none of them (maybe ''Spay'') have a killer guitar solo, and I still cant understand why SBQM was chosen to be the first single.

''Slither'' had everything to be the first single, because people were expecting a hard rocking song with a catchy chorus and a wild guitar solo. And the song/video was a huge success. Shame it would end being the only hard rocking song in ''Contraband''

I cant imagine too many people being enough hypnotized with ''She Build Quick Machines'' to go and buy the album. I wish to be wrong

It's you.

I loved the snippet of "Last Fight", I'm anxious to hear the full version.  I liked "She Mine" up until the chorus, that was just bad.  "Spay" has potential.  Not a big fan of SBQM but it's only on first listen.  Maybe I could warm up to it, but it certainly didn't grab me initially.
