LONDON (Reuters) - A British man who went on a wild spending spree after doctors said he only had a short time to live wants compensation because the diagnosis was wrong and he is now healthy -- but broke.

John Brandrick, 62, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer two years ago and told that he would probably die within a year.

He quit his job, sold or gave away nearly all his possessions, stopped paying his mortgage and spent his savings dining out and going on holiday.

Brandrick was left with little more than the black suit, white shirt and red tie that he had planned to be buried in when it emerged a year later that his suspected "tumor" was no more than a non-life threatening inflammation of the pancreas.

"When they tell you you've got a limited time and everything, you do enjoy life," Brandrick, from Cornwall in the west of England, told Sky television.

"I'm really pleased that I've got a second chance in life... but if you haven't got no money after all this, which is my fault -- I spent it all -- they should pay something back."

If he can't get compensation, he is considering selling his house or suing the hospital that diagnosed him. The hospital has said that while it sympathizes with Brandrick, a review of his case showed no different diagnosis would have been made.

Well the story is kind of funny in a way, but at the same time, WTF is the guy going to do now? If I was diagnosed with cancer and was given 12-18 months to live, I'd stop working, and try to live as much as possible.

How is a 62 yr old man going to recoup all that money he burned through?

Two Words: Shit happens.

He should have at least sought a second opinion. That's what I would have done if diagnosed with some terminal illness and told that I have a year to live.

After a life or death experience you tend to adopt new values - money becomes not so important.

But seriously, he could leak and sell some unfinished music...... Wink

Shit happens, yea like getting a lawyer and suing the hospital for damages and lost money...shit happens.

Speaking of second opinions, remember Joe Vs The Volcano, and his "brain cloud."  hihi

He could do that but I don't think he'll win. It's not like the diagnosis caused him bodily harm. But hey, if can get rich on this then why not, eh?

People sue for emotional distress all the time. In this case, I may actually agree with it. Mainly I think I would side with him for loss of money.

If the reverse occurred, say he was misdiagnosed as healthy, but died a year later died of cancer, would you still say "Hey shit happens." Seems a little more thick skinned there don't you think?

Somebody who has no money left to retire, or live out there life from a misdiagnoses ruins their life. They should pony up the money IMO.  Grin

If you can get refused at a club, sneak in the bathroom window, fall and crack out most of your teeth, sue the owner, and then win in court...

I say this guy got a case.

I see your point. Actually, I would side with him too. The hospital can certainly afford it. Grin

I think the hospital should just kill him, that way everyone's satisfied.

Reminds me of Henny Youngman from 'Goodfellas':

The doctor gave a guy six months to live, the guy couldn't pay his bill. So the doctor gave him another six months.
