Sounds cool but too much like gnr, I was hoping he would make it darker and scarier and more like his other solo stuff

I prefer the REAL WTTJ, I hate when other bands cover GNR songs, they're never as good.  GNR has a sound that only GNR can produce.  How many times at bars do you hear cover bands do bon jovi, or some thing else, but when they do GNR its like stop playing.

I disagree, some guns covers are better than the original.

"Better" by The Mother Goose Pickers comes to mind.

And I don't know who sang it but I heard a good "Used To Love Her" cover.

I wonder if this came about from his rehearsing AFD for his auditions.

What auditions?

For gn'r

He didn't.

i don't think he auditioned, that was only a rumor wasn't it?

You really don't know that. Someone, perhaps Tommy, said they auditioned several guitarists. He could have been one of them.

It just struck me that it's almost 20 years ago AFD was released when listening to this song. I'm getting old.  Shocked

Nobody can ever top the 'Welcome to the Jungle' cover by Richard Cheese.? Pure genius...

As for permission/royalties, you don't need permission if you sell/profit-from a cover in which you don't change the lyrics, and you never need permission to perform a cover live.? So because of what Wierd Al does, he needs permission from the artists he parodies.? Richard Cheese however doesn't need permission.? Even though he severely changes the style of playing the song, he sticks to the 'general nature' of the work and doesn't modify the lyrics.? Cheese does need to cough up 'standard' royalties (pennies per song per album sold), but he can just throw them their money and do his thing.? Tribute bands fall into the same category.?

Didn't some alternative band cover 'Civil War' recently?? I'd like to get a copy of that too..

Yes, Mr. Cheese rocks.

If I may correct you on one thing though, Weird Al has said (and I think it's even on the FAQ section of his website) that he does NOT need permission from artists to parody their songs. ?He asks as a professional courtesy, and when an artist tells him no (so far only Prince has consistently told him no, and Eminem told him he could do...er, whatever that one song was, as long as he didn't do the video too) then he agrees not to do it. ?

Hoobastank did the Civil War cover, it's just acoustic/vocals. ?It was ok.

Edit:? From Al's website
Quote
Does Al get permission to do his parodies?

Al does get permission from the original writers of the songs that he parodies. While the law supports his ability to parody without permission, he feels it's important to maintain the relationships that he's built with artists and writers over the years. Plus, Al wants to make sure that he gets his songwriter credit (as writer of new lyrics) as well as his rightful share of the royalties.

I think he didn't have Coolio's permission for Amish Paradise.  I remember one of the VH1 specials saying that Coolio was very upset by that parody.

Not all is sinister on "The Devil Knows My Name" but there are tunnels to the past greats. John 5 shreds out his version of GUNS N' ROSES' "Welcome To The Jungle" and CHET ATKINS' "Young Thing". "I chose 'Welcome To The Jungle' for one reason ? when I was becoming successful it was easy to stay in the nest back home, then I saw the video and that made me get up and go to Hollywood," explains John 5. "Welcome To The Jungle" will be the first single off the album and will hit the airwaves soon.

At least it was only instrumental. Which sounded great. Best cover I've heard. smoking

john 5 talks about covering welcome to the jungle in knac.com

KNAC.COM: How did you want to make this CD different from your previous instrumental releases?

JOHN 5: I wanted to make it a little bit more extreme than the first two releases. I wanted to give, as much as I could. I kind of put everything in there but the kitchen sink. The first song,? First Victim? is done with a violin bow. I just wanted to make the songs pretty long and pretty intense and really have a lot of information in there. I also did a cover of ?Welcome To The Jungle", which is really close to my heart. That is kind of what really made me want to move to California was that video. When I saw it, I said this is definitely what I am going to do. It has got a lot of meaning to it. On ?Young Thing", I just wanted to do a little bit of (country) western on there to mix it up a bit.

KNAC.COM: I loved how you revamped ?Welcome To The Jungle?. Actually your guitar parts scream out Axl's lyrics in such a way that it is really unique.

JOHN 5: I just wanted to just do his vocals, as close as possible. Even with the little phrases that he does. It came out really good, I am really proud of it.

Hearing John5 play Welcome to the Jungle is so weird. The way he makes the guitar replace the vocals is good.

I'd like to see Buckerhead release his take on some guns songs. He does a great intro to Welcome to the Jungle.
