John 5 is an amazingly talented player. I've met him a few times, going out to see him again this April. He's a real gentleman. I've collected picks and stuff, you name it. Anyway, I'm very excited to hear this. I've been looking forward to his new solo album and had no idea he was covering WTTJ. Good to hear. Very exciting. I was disappointed his band Loser didn't work out, but it wasn't for my taste anyway. He works out way better for the Zombie. His work with Manson is phenomenal, but Manson isn't all that much a guitar oriented band, and he was lost under a muck of production and such. Too bad. His work with them on The Golden Age of Grotesque was really unique, especially the song "Para-noir" where he solos blindfolded and with headphones on playing other distractions so he can't hear himself play. Anyone interested should check out his work with Rob Halford on the HUGELY underrated 2wo Voyeurs album.

All it was is, at the time he joined Marilyn Manson you had to have a weird name.? And he's probably a fan of the Short Circuit movies.

Ha I forgot all about Johnny 5.

It would have been interesting to hear him in GNR, though.

i'm fine with what we have

I still would have loved to of heard him with GNR.

I wonder if this came about from his rehearsing AFD for his auditions.

Nobody can ever top the 'Welcome to the Jungle' cover by Richard Cheese.  Pure genius...

As for permission/royalties, you don't need permission if you sell/profit-from a cover in which you don't change the lyrics, and you never need permission to perform a cover live.  So because of what Wierd Al does, he needs permission from the artists he parodies.  Richard Cheese however doesn't need permission.  Even though he severely changes the style of playing the song, he sticks to the 'general nature' of the work and doesn't modify the lyrics.  Cheese does need to cough up 'standard' royalties (pennies per song per album sold), but he can just throw them their money and do his thing.  Tribute bands fall into the same category.

Didn't some alternative band cover 'Civil War' recently?  I'd like to get a copy of that too..

Yes, Mr. Cheese rocks.

If I may correct you on one thing though, Weird Al has said (and I think it's even on the FAQ section of his website) that he does NOT need permission from artists to parody their songs. ?He asks as a professional courtesy, and when an artist tells him no (so far only Prince has consistently told him no, and Eminem told him he could do...er, whatever that one song was, as long as he didn't do the video too) then he agrees not to do it. ?

Hoobastank did the Civil War cover, it's just acoustic/vocals. ?It was ok.

Edit:  From Al's website
Quote
Does Al get permission to do his parodies?

Al does get permission from the original writers of the songs that he parodies. While the law supports his ability to parody without permission, he feels it's important to maintain the relationships that he's built with artists and writers over the years. Plus, Al wants to make sure that he gets his songwriter credit (as writer of new lyrics) as well as his rightful share of the royalties.

john 5 is really under rated, in manson he doesnt solo or anything, or really with rob zombie, but just check him out on the beatles metal tribute album, first track, he plays with duff and alice cooper, the solos are badass!

what album is that?

butchering the beatles, came out last year. pretty good.

Is John going to join Guns 'n' Roses?

John has been linked with Guns ?N? Roses ever since he left Marilyn Manson but there is no truth behind this rumour.
