Just realized - you need the permission from the original band/singer to do a cover of a song correct?  At least to do a cover of a song for material gain (profit) and put on an album.  Therefore, Axl would have to authorize this right?  Just interesting how a single for Welcome to the Jungle is hitting airwaves around a tentative release time for Chinese Democracy.  Very interesting indeed....

I'm 99% certain that you don't need permission.  You just have to pay for rights and ensure the original artist gets the royalities they're entitled to and go through the proper legal channels.  What a nightmare it would be if the original artists had to personally approve any and all covers of their work...there are many, many cover songs out there that are likely embarrassing to the original artists, you know?

You do need permission when recording a version intended for release. Live however is a different matter.

John 5 doesn't need Axl's permission to do this. He got a compulsory mechanical liscense: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechanical_license

As for Black Hawk Down, movie soundtracks are not included in the mechanical liscense framework, so the artists must give thier permission.

Wrong. Sanctuary would as Axl sold the rights to the back catalog to them in 2005 I believe was the year.

This is gonna be awesome. I'm a huge, huge fan of Ron Thal, but in my heart of hearts, I so wanted John5 to be the 3rd guitarist. He is amazing. I saw him play with Rob Zombie, great player...

john 5 is really under rated, in manson he doesnt solo or anything, or really with rob zombie, but just check him out on the beatles metal tribute album, first track, he plays with duff and alice cooper, the solos are badass!

I agree. John 5 is a great player. I'm actually interested to hear his version of Jungle.

Axl should download John 5's WTTJ instrumental- load it onto his mac- and add his vocals onto using Garage Band- and release it as the first single off Chinese Democracy. It'll only take a day or two.
