in 1991 gnr were the biggest band in the world,in 1987 they were new band

every 'new' fan who bought UYI also bought AFD afterwards i guess. 7 million is approx. 1/2 of 15 million.
okay just my guess.

Plus there were 2 albums to buy.. Twice the money..

Also Appetite made them the hottest band in 91.....

I could be mistaken, but I believe at least in the US, 50 Cent broke Gn'R's record with his debut album "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" a few years back.

Dude, love him or hate him, 50 Cent's debut album was a MASSIVE success.

I think he sold well over a million copies the first week that album was out.

Neither of these albums, will sell like appetite when they are 20 years old... Once appetite is updated I'm guessing these will have gone up 1 mil at best... Appetite 4-7 mil easily...

probably correct...I think Geffen is waiting for the 20th anniversary of AFD to recertify it. Seriously, it would be a great PR move to schedule the release date of Chinese Democracy around the 20th anniversary of AFD. Recertify AFD- it is probably around 17 million or so in the us, maybe more. Then, remaster and release AFD with bonus tracks. It would get a lot of press. Couple that with Velvet Revolver's release in July and you would have quite a GNR mega party! Velvet, Chinese, and remastered AFD in the same month-THE PERFECT STORM for GNR fans worldwide. It makes to much sense so it won't happen.

I recall it selling something like 35 000 copies each week world wide. Even if its down to 20 000 units, imagine what an asset for its record company.  It is a classic, even legendary rock 'n roll recording, and it still sounds good today, a merit that many recordings from the same time period dont carry...

yeah, alanis and hootie's debuts were pretty famous in the mid 90's for selling more than appetite in the US.
But gn'r, in late 80's and early 90's were such a strong band, undoubtly the biggest band in the world. if you just look at Brazil, there's a market just as big as the US. i mean, any guy can sell some millions over there. Gn'R were so big in South America that i really believe they sold a shitload of records over there, even more than in Europe - even if the buying power in south america isn't too famous, they had local pressings and sold records cheaper than they would if they were importing cd's.

IN THE US: Hmm, i belive appetite had sold 15 mill. in 1999. thats 8 years ago.. and im pretty sure its more like 20 mill today.

I remember Matt saying in a VH1 retrospective show about gnr that Axl's goal with the Illusion albums was to sell 35 million copies world-wide. I don't know why, but it always stood out as a memorable quote to me. He was talking about how the illusions tour just kept going on for years and he said something like, "Axl wanted to push the album sales over 35 million world-wide, and we were sitting at about 33 million and we were all pretty beat, and we started looking around at each other and thinking, this thing has got to stop." That quote always kind of stood out to me just for the fact that it showed how the band was on a mission on that tour and really pushed themselves to the max.

Unrelated to album sales, but another quote from that show about the illusion tour that I always remembered was I think Slash said that no one wanted the illusion tour to end just because they all knew in the back of their minds that once the tour ended it would pretty much be the end of the band.  He even said how Axl dropped him off at his house after flying home from the last show of the tour and said, "well, that's that." And Slash said that he remembered thinking, "well, now what?"

pretty close last i checked it was 350K last year, so about 20K a month, but still, pretty great!!!
