Gilby Clarke and Clan Visit VR

03.27.08

Hey Peeps,

Gilby Clarke and his wife Daniella stopped by the Brixton gig with daughter Frankie . Great to see them, haven?t seen him for quite a while. They all looked great. After GN?R Gilby has been doing his own thing and producing alot of bands. Also did the big TV show rockstar/supernova with Tommy Lee and Camp Freddy bandmate Dave Navarro. Daniella created the denim company Frankie B. which has done amazing. I remember when Daniella would wear low-cut jeans around GN?R And girls would always ask her where she got them. She would make them herself and after all the reaction went into business with Gilby as vice president ,the rest is history. anyway great night with them and more good times once again here at Mattsorum.tv

Ha, that is pretty cool.  Everyone of the members from 87-93 have hung out with Axl and Slash and had fun except Slash and Axl with each other.  Ha.

Gilby is awesome and he puts on a helluva live show. I wish he would come by NJ again. My friends and I waited for him after the only show I saw him at and he talked with us for about a half hour and signed everything we had and took a hundred pictures.

JOE SATRIANI, GLENN HUGHES, GILBY CLARKE Confirmed For New Zealand's G-TARANAKI - Apr. 20, 2008

According to Stuff.co.nz, guitar legend Joe Satriani, former DEEP PURPLE and BLACK SABBATH bassist and vocalist Glenn Hughes and ex-GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Gilby Clarke have been confirmed for New Zealand's first international guitar festival, to be held in July 14-19.

The festival, called G-TARanaki, has been made possible by the international rock reputation and perserverance of Venture Taranaki events project manager Garry Sharpe-Young.

The former rock journalist and writer of countless rock 'n' roll books said the festival would include a number of concerts, workshops, forums, jam sessions and school visits.

Its objective was to give New Zealand guitarists the opportunity to learn from and be inspired by guitar legends across a variety of musical styles.

Sharpe-Young said what was special about the festival was the artists would not jet out as soon as they had played, but would stick around to mix with locals.

"I hope this festival will create lots of unique moments that will only happen in Taranaki. We're going to be getting a lot of local guitar experts in as well, and you never know what will happen when you get all of them together with these international guys. There will be a lot of collaboration, a lot of sharing."

Gilby interview...

Hogs, heroes and rock n roll

23.07.2008
By Kylie Malin

FORMER Guns N Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke was in Taranaki last week for the countrys first international guitar festival G-TARanaki.

I chatted to him on Thursday night before he played a Midnight Session at Puke Ariki.

K: What was the driving force behind your decision to sign on for G- TARanaki?

G: First of all, anything to do with music and inspiration has gotta be a good thing. I wanted to come in support of the young people from around here who are so passionate about playing guitar. I was in Opunake today with Uli Jon Roth at his Sky Academy workshop and the raw talent was awesome.

We didnt have anything like this when I was growing up, we just had to admire success and try and emulate it.

K: Did you spot any particular talent at Sky Academy?

G: Yeah for sure. There was one kid who just got up there and played a Paul Gilbert piece and he had everything you are supposed to have to be a successful guitar player. Uli only had to point out a couple of technical things. You know, you never know what to expect when you go to something like that and it was great to see. It is all about encouraging people to learn.

K: You grew up in the era of some of the greatest rock n roll tunes ever produced. Was that a big part in your decision to become a musician?

G: I saw a poster of Jimi Hendrix when I was a kid and I thought, I want to be that guy. Not I want to be like that guy, I wanted to be him! I just started to buy records Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Kiss, all the great 70s rock. I just knew I wanted to be a guitar player.

K: Did you have a blueprint for your career?

G: No, no blueprint. You know, I was always ahead of other kids my age, always hangin out with the older kids. In high school I was just playing in a band, I didnt really think about it, I just did it. To me it was just about rock n roll, it meant freedom to me. I wanted to play guitar, work on my own time. I say its just rock n roll and to me that means its all OK.

K: Youve put out a lot of solo work. How has your personal style evolved?

G: Ive always been influenced by the greats, Jimmy Page, B.B. King. I figured out who I was by listening to them. I found what I liked to play, and I played it. Once you know what you like, its easy to create a style that you are happy with.

Sometimes my music sounds incredibly bluesy and rootsy, other times it is a completely different sound. I never give myself boundaries or stick to a rigid theme. I create records that I would want to buy.

K: Youve been keeping yourself busy since the Supernova tour?

G: After the Supernova tour I went straight into the studio and produced four records back to back. The Supernova thing was fun, but it was still a bit structured for me so right now Im just enjoying playing music. Ive just been around Canada and theres some other dates lined up.

K: Youre playing an acoustic set tonight, what can we expect?

G: We havent done an acoustic set in so long, so tonight is going to be really fun. Were going to get the crowd involved, keep a loose set list and just go from there. There will be a bit of my solo stuff, some Supernova and just because its great music, some Rolling Stones, a bit of Led Zep and maybe some Bob Dylan.

K: Speaking of great music, whats your ultimate band line-up?

G: Oh man, thats hard! Its gotta be Keith Moon on drums. I always change my mind on this one, but Im gonna go Paul McCartney on bass. Ill be greedy and have two guitarists, Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix and old school Steve Tyler on vocals. Hes the ultimate front man.

K: If you could have played guitar in any band, past or present, which would it be?

G: Its gotta be the Rolling Stones. I really love playing their songs. But you know, Guns N Roses was really the perfect band for me. It was my style, they are great songs and they are great to play. They are good, loud songs and thats what I love doing.

K: Youre known as a bit of a motorcycle enthusiast. Whats in your garage?

G: I have a 1965 Harley that I have had forever. It has changed colour more times than I can count and it is so rigid, it has no shocks. It is dirty and rough and I love it.

Ive ridden it everywhere. For me, riding is about peaceful solitude and I love just getting out there by myself.

K: Whats your key philosophy?

G: To me, if music is for you, you should love what you are doing all the time and play for the music.
