If this is true...that's fucking amazing!!!?

Of course it's true, why should I lie to fellow gunners?? ?beer

BTW, I find it intersting how the experience of listening changes, if you listen to the songs over and over again.
At first I had a feeling of two seperate parts: One part until the piano, then the other. Not really connected.
Then I had the feeling that they are connected, the first part being a build-up for the second.
And now I feel morelike the song is a complete thing, no "parts" at all.
I wonder what will come next.? hihi

Funny you mention it that way.  When I first heard Rocket Queen back in '89 (on cassette tape mind you) I thought it was 2 separate songs.  Okay, so I was young and stupid, but I had a similar reaction.  Weird.

On topic.  There Was a Time is hands-down the most amazing song I've heard in a very long time.  I can't wait to hear the final product.  How can you NOT identify with the pain in this song???

Good point with the rocket queen.. i fully didnt realize it was the same song.. i love that effect.. in any type of music.. versatility thats what makes songs great.

Nice story man, i guess the people that love this song feel some sort of emotional connection with the lyrics. Iv? been planning on asking this girl out for ages now. I really do love her very much, weve been friends for 10 years, went to see her then found out she is going out with someone else.

I felt destroyed and really quite ill so turned the player on in the car, TWAT started playing, I love all the song but when "I would do anything for you" came on i just burst into tears. Axls vocals just ripped through everything. Im 19 and not ashamed to say that. Im a very lonely person and i think thats why Estranged, Coma and now TWAT are my favourite songs

Hey Andypa1, don't give up on that chick...and if she isn't down with gettin with you, fuck it, and keep your chin up when she's around.  (when she isn't around blast Estranged, There Was a Time, and then Coma!!!)  We've all been in your shoes, and I wish someone told me the same thing when I was in your situation ages ago!   ok

Really sorry if this has been covered already but I didn't go through all 41 pages.

Anyway I downloaded TWAT about 2 weeks ago and it was 6.01 mins long with a really crisp catchy guitar solo after Axl screams 'there was a time'. Couple of minutes ago I found a version of TWAT that was 6.43 mins long, and was identical to my 1st version except for the end solo which lasts longer and is much faster with (I'm no expet on guitar so sorry if this is the wrong term) much more shredding and imo sound much messier than the 1st version I had. Did everybody know about this, or are there 2 demos circulating, or is 1 of them a fake? Cos I don't know about you guys but I think the 6.01 version sounds much cleaner and less messy than the longer version, whats your view?

Like I said if this has been covered already just let me know and I'll delete the post or you can just ignore it lol.  peace

Uhm, my version is 6:43.

Yeh I've just listened to both of them again and on the 6.43 track at the 4.40 point when the faster soloing begins, that isn't on the 6.01 version. It goes from the solo at the 4.40 point straight to the solo at the 5.24 point on the 6.01 version. I'm guessin the 6.01 version I downloaded had been edited by someone first or something, but it actually fits really well and I think sounds better than the 6.43 version imo.

well thanks guys, but in the words of better "A twist of fate a change of heart would cure my infactuation" i think its best if i try and move on sure i still have feelings for her, but now shes being just rude avoiding me being snappy and rude. Iv liked her for about 9 years and im 19! im just crap with girls i guess.
Anyway sorry i should probably be posting on www.fastseduction.com not HTGTH. But i connect with alot of GNR songs.

I think im going to send her a cd with Dont Cry (her favourite song of any band), Coma, Estranged and TWAT. And write on the disc i hope this expresses my sentiments, as she wont give me the oppertunity to tell her how i feel.

Twat (There Was A Time)

Broken glass and cigarettes
Writing on the wall
It was a bargain for the summer
And I thought I had it all
I was the one who gave you everything
The one who took the fall
You were the one who would do anything
One who can?t recall
Where she was while she was sleeping
In another?s women?s bed
Or the doctors or the lawyers or the stranger that she met
If there?s nothing that I can gain from this
Or anything at all
It'd be the knowledge that you gave me when I thought I'd heard it all

It was a long time for you
It was a long time for me
It?d be a long time for everyone but looks like it?s meant to be

Social class and registers
Cocaine in the hall
All the way from California
On the way beyond that stall
To those non-negotiations, to simulate a call
While the battle of mid-evils, and your ways around the laws
That'd keep you up and sitting pretty
On a pedestal of fear
And now you're sleeping like an angel
Near than man who reaped it
If there's something I can make of this
Or anything at all
It'd be the devil hates a loser and you thought you had it all

It was the wrong time for you
It was the wrong time for me
It was the wrong time for everyone
But it looks like I'm 'bout to see for myself

(YEP)

If I could go back in time to the place in my soul
They?re all alone, lonely teardrops
Ooh, are calling you
But I don't want to know it now
Cuz knowing you it won't change a damn thing

But there was a time

[solo]

There was a time
Didn't want to know it all
Didn't want to know it all
And I don't wanna know it now
Don't want to know it now

Yeah, There was a time
Didn't want to know it all
Didn't want to know it all
And I don't wanna know it now

I would do anything for you
There was a time

I would do anything for you
There was a time

I would do anything for you
There was a time

[solo]

There was a time
I would do anything for you

There was a time
Didn't want to know it all
Didn't want to know it all
And I don't wanna know it now
Don't want to know it now

There was a time
Didn't want to know it all
Didn't want to know it all
And I don't wanna know it now
Don't want to know it now

There was a time
Didn't want to know it all
Didn't want to know it all

new to the board....PLEASEEEE be gentle!!
twat....i like it....
so far ive heard twat, irs, better, oh my god and then the live versions of madagascar, chinese democracy, silkworms, the blues and rhiad and the bedouins.....
the new stuff has a real industrial sound to it....like My World was the starting point on UYI2....one thing i really dig so far....Axl sounds ANGRY as hell....alot of aggression....passion.....something that i was affraid he would lose...but its moreso there now than ever before....
anyway....
TWAT....i like it
IRS....KICKS!!!
Better....that one took me a few listens...
Oh My God...LOVE IT!!
The Blues....again...took me some time to like it!
Madagascar....a bit BIG...but i love the vocal melody...
Chinese Democracy....that one grabbed me right off the bat!!
I would like to hear some more of the "rockers"....
anyway...thanks for playing....

Quick thought - and apologies if anyone's already mentioned this - but has anyone considered taking the version of TWAT with vocals, amplifying the vocals at the expense of all the other instruments, and then mixing it together with the instrumental version? That'd solve the problem of Axl's vocals being too low in the mix at a stroke, I reckon...

i think its fuckin great, as ar all of the songs from cd that have been heard live/leaked- except silkworms though...thats shite. haha

Still love this song the best of all the leaks, it just sounds so epic and I love the guitar melodies.

It's probably been mentioned already, but some of the end lead guitar parts sound a bit like Zakk Wylde.

Of all the leaks I find myself listening to TWAT the most... I don't know, it's just too deep, emotional and hypnotic at the same time. It's so laid back at the beginning, then just grabs you to a melodic journey like no other...

I thought Madagascar is the best new song, but when TWAT came out... it's hard to put which one is better especially when you listen to them one after the other.

« Reply #816 on: March 17, 2006, 02:39:54 AM »

I gotta say I was skeptical of axl for the last couple years.... no new album, canceled tour, werid new band, etc etc

But after hearing better and TWAT... I'm almost shitting my pants i'm so excited.

Even my folk music loving girlfriend, and my slash loving best friend BOTH are absolutely floored by the new stuff. My girlfriend for axl's lyrics, and my buddy by robins guitar playing.... interesting.

Don't you think that the intro to twat would sound better if the vocals were delayed for a couple of bars, allowing you to hear that cool guitar melody that is so clear in the instrumental- then the vocals kick in.
I know it is a poor mix but the vocals really steal some of the thunder from the guitar melodies in the first half of the song.
