Waiting for Promised Land....

opening reminds me of a wutang clan beat

Very true. I knew that it reminded me of some kind of rap beat.

i think that in general with the newest songs is the only letdown that it's not some guitar rif just turning on the minute it starts.. Both better and twat are not my type of starts but both songs are good..

Good observation and point, Mike.  That does stand in stark contrast to the old material where you'd often have a guitar riff kicking off the song.  Personally, I hope there are some of those on the new album.

but I'm seriously not sure how you can say that.... better then both put together?

Totally.  It's much more mature musically and lyrically, and more concise, it's just better.

Anyone else think it has a creepy sound to it, especially the intro.

As for the actual song I suspect the polished version has alot more orchestra on so it should turn out good.

Just heard the bad boy for the first time - and few more times, at that.

Bravo.

---

It's nice to able to put some of Tommy's comment on CD into proper context now.

Stinson says "Chinese Democracy" sounds "a little like the old Guns, but a lot deeper lyrically. There's more introspective and socially minded stuff, and musically it takes a lot more risks than they ever took. It's going to be amazing."

Aren't Better and TWAT just that? Heh, it rhymes.  hihi

Where was I? Yeah, waiting for CD - more than ever.

DANCE DANCE DANCE DANCE DANCE TO THE RADIO

« Reply #506 on: February 19, 2006, 07:48:41 PM »

With regards to the drums, I think these are 'demo' drums - just a basic beat to play the songs to.

I'm pretty sure these are not the finished drums.

The same can possibly be said for the guitar solos. Although, I hope the final Bucket solo is kept as it is because it rocks very hard.

I can't handle the chorus, it sounds very messy, but it is only a demo so we shall see...That piano part is damn catchy though.

I think Axl deserves more credit for his lyrics, he's a genius, and both Better and TWAT are further testament to his ability.

I like the chorus they just need to make it louder at the end since the guitar drowns them out

Yeah, it has an almost NIN vibe to it with the melancholy piano melody.
I was unsure at first listen, but now I think it's really great. Would love to hear the finished version.

Also the "there was a time" chant reminds me of the "don't you think that you need somebody" part at the end of Nov Rain, and there's parts of the guitar solo that remind me of what Bucket plays in Madagascar.

Very cool. beer

Holy crap. I just have to say how amazingly Axl sings the line "that keeps you up and sitting pretty". He does that "prettay" thing. BTW, does anyone notice all of the references to high school (cigarettes, writing on the wall, class, beoynd that stall, cocaine in the hall, etc.)?

The production seems off-i know its likely not the finished product, but musically TWAT does very little for me. Axl's lyrics arent amazing but his voice is strong.

Has anyone "figured out" the lyrics? I can't hear them well enough to put them together......The more I listen to the song the more I like it.

Twat (There Was A Time)

Broken glass and cigarettes
Writing on the wall
It was a bargain for the summer
And I thought I had it all
I was the one who gave you everything
The one who took the fall
You were the one who would do anything
One who can?t recall
Where she was while she was sleeping
In another?s women?s bed
Or the doctors or the lawyers or the stranger that she met
If there?s nothing that I can gain from this
Or anything at all
It'd be the knowledge that you gave me when I thought I'd heard it all

It was a long time for you
It was a long time for me
It?d be a long time for everyone but looks like its meant to be

Social class and registers
Cocaine in the hall
All the way from California
On the way beyond that stall
To those malnegotiations, to simulate a call
While the battle of medieval, and your ways around the laws
That'd keep you up and sitting pretty
On a pedestal of fear
And now you're sleeping like an angel
Near than man who reaped It
If there's something I can make of this
Or anything at all
It'd be the devil hates a loser and you thought you had it all

It was the wrong time for you
It was the wrong time for me
It was the wrong time for everyone
But it looks like I'm 'bout to see for myself

If I could go back in time to the place in my soul
They?re all alone, lonely teardrops
Ooh, oh calling you
But I don't want to know it now
Cuz knowing you it won't change a damn thing

But there was a time

[solo]

There was a time
Didn't want to know it all
Didn't want to know it all
And I don't wanna know it now
Don't want to know it now

Yeah, There was a time
Didn't want to know it all
Didn't want to know it all
And I don't wanna know it now
Don't want to know it now

I would do anything for you
There was a time

I would do anything for you
There was a time

I would do anything for you
There was a time

[solo]

There was a time
I would do anything for you

There was a time
Didn't want to know it all
Didn't want to know it all
And I don't wanna know it now
Don't want to know it now

There was a time
Didn't want to know it all
Didn't want to know it all
And I don't wanna know it now
Don't want to know it now

There was a time
Didn't want to know it all
Didn't want to know it all

I notice that people keep going on about the chorus being bad, but to me this song doesn't really have a proper chorus part, but then neither did Estranged, and that didn't stop Estranged form being a great song.

I really like TWAT, its prolly my fav of the new songs.

just heard it, the song is absolutely fucking amazing. ?This is song is definetly bar raising, i mean it surpasses the UYI stuff, I would take There Was A Time over any illusion song, i mean its on par with nov rain, but in a completely different way. ?
If this record comes out, the current members in gnr are goign to be like thats why we stayed in the band because of songs like this.

To me this song gets better as it goes along, its like nothing on the radio today, just purely amazing
