If you view the youtube video of the only time this was played in NYC in May, you will see why it isn't played live.  It was butchered.  This hopefully would change w/ time and practice but it seemed a little too soon to unleash live.

I was wondering if this may be the case as it seems to me to be a very complex and sophisticated piece of music.

It totally sounds like what GNR should be sounding like IMHO.

I've been looking for that youtube vid but haven't been able to find it yet. Huh

You guys are very incorrect.

The song was played very well at Madrid during the European tour. I'll yousendit in a min

The only one who fucked it up there was Axl

Personally I feel like the song is just too long and since nobody knows it, a mood killer. Once the album changes.. it will be different.

Because Ron cant play BHs part like BH did.  Dont get me wrong, i like ron but he cant play the song well, and its not his fault since i am sure he has not practiced it that much

Ron played BH's part just perfect. He didn't sound the same because he don't have too, but he didn't use a wha and/or the killswitch. Don't talk about what you don't know.

Agreed, he played BH's part fine. I think Axl was fine on it too. It was a little rough but so were some of the UYI songs at the warm up gigs and Rio in '91. When the album comes out I hope it is a staple in the set list. Maybe before Paradise City like Estranged used to be.

I just heard the first live version...man this fuckin song totally owns.

If thats Ron doing the shred solo in it(Madrid version) it sounds great! I wish they would have played it at the shows I saw...I think it would generate a great response. It jams out, and builds up. It probably would be better than Madagscar in crowd response(both long epicish songs), because of the killer solos

That version cemented it as my fav "New" GNR song

I have the video from MSG and I thought they rocked the shit out of it...the only part they butchered was when axl shared the mic with tommy stinson and I found out in a hurry that tommy can't sing..other than that it kicked ass!!! ?the crowd really wasn't in to it, probably going back to the point of it being a mood killer.....

I was at the show, he missed a ton of notes and skipped a whole guitar part. Like I said at that point he was just in the band for a few weeks. HE did better at teh Madrid show. I am sure he can play it better now. But the song is a mess live and its not just ron. I esp think th ey wont try it without brain. I like ron a lot, dont get me wrong, I even said he was my ideal choice for a replacement. They just dont want to play the song until? they have it down so it wont sound bad live

What are you talking about? Axl was awesome in that performance. The "I would do anything" part sounds even better than he does in the demo.

I think if they played TWAT it would get the best reaction out of all the new songs, but maybe it just is not time for that yet.

Axl sounds terrible during the verse.

And, keep in mind I'm not trying to offend you, have you ever been to one of the 2006 concerts?

The new songs suck the wind out of the place. Not because they are bad.. but because people dont know them. TWAT would be 9 min of sitting down for most fans at 1 in the morning during a GNR show.

Sorry -Jack-, it's all subjective.  I was at the Hammerstein May 12th.  I posted a review when I got home to Delaware after a 3 hour car ride from NY City.  My highlights of the whole god damn night included the last verse of There Was a Time.  The "I would do anything for you...there was a time," gave me fucking chills.

Other highlights?  OTGM, and of course the appearance of Axl at the beginning of the fucking show looking fit and cool as hell again.

I saw them in Jersey as well and had a great fucking time.  This band rules!

There Was a Time to me is like an Estranged or Coma...break it out for special occasions.   Wink

I love TWAT but there is one part that makes me cringe and I hate it.

Right before the first chorus that Gay ass guitar lick that sounds like a Fischer's price Keytar........... I hate that, I absolutely hate that lick.

rest of the song is great, i just wish they'd lose that gay ass guitar lick goin into the first chorus.

twat live is really terrible (especially axl); the same with "better"; why can't axl sing the lines he wrote himself properly. he  is often out of time and out of tune; and the character of his voice doesn't sound right here as well...

Go to youtube and type in there was a time and watch the live performance from 5/12.  It's awesome !  Of course it's not as tight as the old songs fuck they only played this song twice.  But the vocals and guitar work is amazing.  This is in my opinion the best of the new songs, and can stack up to anything old.  I hope it's a regular in the next tour.

Hearing the final mix of this song will be interesting, in the demo theres alot of orchestra, and live there is more guitar.  There both amazing, but Robins solo live is fucking awesome.
