I drive by that intersection every day. I drove by the day that the 4 inches of sleet fell and it was snow white after the plow came through. 

Same in front of my house. I think I would know where the soot comes from. And if you watch it over a weeks period of time as the sleet or snow metls, it gets thicker.

ya.... same here....... some people dont realise that 99% of that black crap comes from sand/salt and mechincal action of the rubber on the road causing the "spatter" to encroach onto teh snow
