I feel the usage of "asian" "black" "white" just gives whoever reads the article more information concerning the story. It's just like giving the persons age. Of course you could say, "Why say '32 year old man?'" Or why even say "man"?

One could easily complain that the current title is ageist or sexist also. Is it? No. Do I feel like the title is racist? No. It's just description... as the man's age and sex are.

If description is not important why not just say "A person kills and dismembers another person"?
And then you have to wonder, "Is this story even relevant at all?"

It's not. Descriptions merely make people think it is.

In case it wasn't obvious, the way I wrote the thread title was a joke - just trying to lighten the mood created by the 'other' thread. Anyway my 2c:

1. I don't think the media should include race, sexuality, religion, national origin etc in headlines unless it's relevant to the story, and they generally don't. Telling me their favourite GNR album, how hot their wife is or what they had for breakfast would build a description too but I'd rather build my own biases based on the facts of the story rather than irrelevant background information.

2. This is a discussion board not the media, people post stuff because it's something they want to discuss. And that comes with built in bias whether it's race, politics or Slash vs Finck - we only see a tiny fraction of the day's news posted here. So I don't think we should be held to the same standards (insert joke here) as the national press, but on the flipside if you emphasize a certain aspect of a story there's a good chance you'll get called on it and have to defend your reasons/opinions.....which is healthy IMO.
