I heard it for the first time today in first period.The kid next to me had it on his mp3 player and it said by ledzepplin I got right excited when i heard the talkin...and it sounds like a different guy doin the voice message...and you can hear the keyboards now at the end part where the choir with the girls singin is.slightly different guitar and drums and theres a line with just bass n drums wehre there normally was guitar

I like the Ritz version the best.  Adler obviously plays on that.  Like all the Ritz performances, it is more Raw, no piano, no background singers, just GNR at its best.

I definitely agree, the Ritz performance is the definitive version. I could do without the slower tempo and gospel singers in the background on the studio version.

if we're talkin about the performance on youtube "ritz 88" or whatever then yes..it is by far the best

I also think kohd live at the ritz1988 is the best version.....the others be it live or album don't get near it......

So thanks for pointing me in the direction of the Days Of Thunder soundtrack. I'm now listening to that version of "Knockin ON Heaven's Door," which recaptures the first time I heard this cover on L.A.'s Pirate Radio 103.1.

I'm trying to figure out what's different about the mix other than the spoken part in the second verse, which for some reason gives me chills, whatever it means.
 
I don't know if it's just the MP3 transfer being different, but the picked guitar at the beginning sounds like it has less reverb or chorus on it in the DOT version. Same goes for the vocals, which sound "warmer" to me on UYI and a little raspier on DOT.

I can't tell if any of the takes are different. The drum sound certainly sounds more like Sorum's style on the final version, more thudding and loud, but maybe that's just the glossy sound that Mike Clink slathered all over UYI as a finished product.

The fact that both versions are identically 5:36 suggests that very little was changed.

The answering machine message is much higher in the mix on the Illusions version.

Considering both Knockin' On Heaven's Door and Civil War were first releases in 1990, maybe both tracks were mixed by somebody else and then "remixed" for USe Your Illusion II?

I don't think Bill Price was involved in the project in the summer of 1990 when both tracks first appeared?
