The KOHD and Civil War verison are really unfinished (Axl's word for ti) demos.  The CW is rough copy on a benefit album.  I have/had it on the tape when it came out.  Really is a cooler rougher finish to it.  They were both released before Axl started tinkering with the mix of the album.

I prefer the Days Of Thunder version of "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" to the Use Your Illusion II version. Is Jarmo 100% certain Matt played drums on the Days Of Thunder version? I thought Steven was still in the band through part of 1990, and the drumming does sound a bit rougher than the polished Use Your Illusion II version.

It's almost identical ... I think the Illusions version is just a mixed and edited version isn't it ?

Oh well ...

June 26th, 1990 - The band's version of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" is released on the "Days Of Thunder" soundtrack.

July 11th, 1990 - Steven Adler is fired from the band. The band made an agreement with Steven which said that if he didn't stop taking drugs he was out. When this didn't help, he was fired.
His replacement is Matt Sorum (born November 19, 1960). Matt's band before GN'R was The Cult.

what part in the movie does this song play? i never catch it when the movie is on in local tv

It plays in the background during one scene so it's easy to miss if you don't listen closely.  It's either the bar scene or when they're in the pits at Darlington.  Days of Thunder is my favorite movie.

That's when he was officially out.

I don't know why it would make it impossible for Matt to have worked with the band while they were still working on trying to get Steven back or working on the legal papers.

They tried working with other drummers before Matt was announced as the new drummer.

Exactly.  There's no difference in the playing, words, (etc) but it is a better sounding mix.  The best way I can describe it is the Nobody's Child version sounds like a remaster of the UYI II version which is odd considering the Nobody's Child version appeared first.

It really does sound almost identical to the Use Your Illusion II track, IMO. Even the "wooo mmm mmm mmm" bit during the intro.

Hi everyone,

Do you remember the pre-Illusion version of "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" in which there were different voices in the background? I can only find one reference on the Net to this, on a Brazilian website: http://www.mauriciomedeiros.eti.br/traducao/trad006k.htm.

What is the deal with this, and is it available anywhere? Was it from a movie soundtrack? I don't think it had the "tattered libido" answering machine message. But instead, during the second verse, someone was saying in between lines:

"How were they even supposed to know"

and

"All things can be healed in time..."

Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack - Days Of Thunder

Track:
Knockin' On Heaven's Door

Versions:
Epic 467159: June 26, 1990

Soundtrack for the movie starring Tom Cruise. Guns N' Roses' contribution was a version of Knockin' On Heaven's Door. It's not the same version as the one on Use Your Illusion II.

Eh, not really, the guitar solo is different and you can hear the piano more. Drums sound different.
