Steven Adler played on the version they released for the film - i suppose u could call it the first single from the album

Evidently they decided to redo it - Matt Sorum said the first track he put drums to was KOHD

The drumming is better on Matt's version i think - but the song itself is much better too, they only made subtle changes but it seems to improve the song

its like i remember its all the exact same thing minus the comments within the verses ......you know the ones i mean.......I'm looking for that days of thunder version to be able to hear the difference......this would make the only song that you could see the difference in their drumming

It has additional lyrics.

Mama put my guns to the ground

***it wasn't her fault***

I can't use them anymore

***How was i even supposed to know?***

That cold balck cloud is coming down.

***All things can be healed in time***

Feels like i'm knocking on heavens door.

I like the Days of Thunder version better. I used to sing the additional lyrics when listening to the Album version. People just gave me a weird look. Grin

I like the Ritz version the best.  Adler obviously plays on that.  Like all the Ritz performances, it is more Raw, no piano, no background singers, just GNR at its best.

I was just listening to that track on the way to work this morning... The rest of the songs on the soundtrack are throwaways, but the KOHD version found here is great in my opinion.

The paino is different ( I wonder who plays it). The production is a bit muddy (bass tones are in the background and not as pronounced - is it still Mike Clink?). I almost wonder if it was a demo. The guitars are the same in this version. I think it's a great collector item. If you find the soundtrack in a delete bin at a record shop, definitely grab it.

You sure? Days of thunder came out in 1990. was Sorrum in GnR at that time?

I don't think so... Days of Thunder Soundtrack was released on June 26th while Adler left the band on July 11th and than Matt joined the band...?

My favorite performance of Knockin' doesn't belong to GN'R but Bob Dylan with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers from concert called Hard To Handle - Bob added there the third verse:

Mama wibe these tears upon my face
I can't see trough them anymore
Get me out of here, into some other place
Feels like I'm Knockin' On Heaven's Door
Just like so many times before...

You're right Michael_Stradlin

Straight from this web sites history section

June 26th, 1990 - The band's version of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" is released on the "Days Of Thunder" soundtrack.
July 11th, 1990 - Steven Adler is fired from the band. The band made an agreement with Steven which said that if he didn't stop taking drugs he was out. When this didn't help, he was fired.
His replacement is Matt Sorum (born November 19, 1960). Matt's band before GN'R was The Cult.

That's correct. But don't forget the fact that they had tried other drummers before Matt even joined. So it's possible they recorded with Matt before they finally fired Steven.

On the site in Recording Sessions I've found some information bout sessions from june 1990 or early 1991 and there are Maples and Chambers plus... Jussi Tegelman - who's that? also other drummer?

He's a Finnish guy who was in a band called Havana Black. They were managed by Alan Niven at one time and Jussi, the drummer, was apparently helping out GN'R while they were trying to sort out the situation with Steven.

Quote
At some point Jussi Tegelman was helping GN'R out on drums, after Steven Adler was forced to leave the band. One can find the name Jussi Tegelman on the thanks list of the "Use Your Illusion I & II" albums.
