There Was a Time

« on: February 26, 2007, 05:24:07 AM »

After a talk with another boarder last night, I got thinking, what is Axl playing at? He sings practically everything from Appetite from Destruction (apart from Anything Goes) and 3 songs from GNR Lies, as well as digging up Down on the Farm from The Spaghetti Incident. However, when it comes to the Illusion record, he sings only 5 songs (one track is an Instrumental Guitar Piece remember) and of those 5 two are covers. Dont Cry and November Rain were written well well before UYI and You Could Be Mine was also written before UYI sessions. With the two covers, he dramtically changes their tempo and style, and they are not sung or performed in the same way as when the original line up performed them.

Think of the singles Civil War, Since I Dont Have You, The Garden, Garden of Eden, Dead Horses, Yesterdays, Aint It Fun, Estranged and the tracks like 14 Years, Double Talkin Jive and Coma that he just doesnt perform? Surely theres got to be SOME legal hold on him not singing these songs, as some of them are considered Guns N Roses classics (had videos made for them, released as singles etc) and it just seems wrong that they havent been touched at all.

It might be a conspiracy theory but I dont see why Axl cant sing one or two of these songs in the tour?

Setlist picture: Perfect Crime

The only possible legal obstacle I can think of re: a UYI track would be, ironically, Don't Cry. Nobody really knows what came out of that one, probably an out of court settlement.

If you honestly don't know, the answer is: No, it hasn't been played yet.

To me, the inclusion implies they've rehearsed the song, and there's no reason why it wouldn't be included to the setlist in the future.

Can I ask though do you have that setlist picture which included several songs that have not been performed yet, and do you know where its from. Its mentioned on Wikipedia as the reference to the songs 'If the World' and 'Prostitute' although Ive never seen this supposed picture....and now you tell me 'Perfect Crime' was also on it? Does anyone have a photo of this supposed list? Huh

I think DC is retired after shannon hoons death, but let's hope that aint forever

and i think axl said at some occasion that he said to the band like "you decide and rehearse what songs you wanna play and i'll sing them.."

and here's that picture:

(if it's still against the rules to post or talk about it then a mod could just edit my post, and let's not turn this thread into a thread about new songs, it's still about lack of UYI songs)

Also, it should be noted that songs like Civil War, Estranged and Coma are comparatively long songs, and including a song like that changes the momentum of the show. Face it, they're not as well-known as November Rain. NR, despite its length, is one of GNR's trademark ballads.

Musically speaking, Civil War would probably be the best fit. Then again, some people might get rubbed the wrong way by it, due to the politically-inclined lyrics. Same goes for Yesterdays, playing it today might be considered as Axl commenting the old band.

It'd be cool to do 14 Years, Dust N Bones and maybe DTJ at the points when Izzy comes on stage, since they were his babies.  I'd also very much like to hear Coma played again, and do they every play Bad Obsession these days?  I always enjoyed that one.

New GNR have never played Bad Obsession.

As for Coma, the old band only ever played that song 4 times, so I doubt the new band would ever make it a regular addition to the set. Besides, it makes the few occasions they have played it even more special. I can see the new band doing something like Dead Horse or Pretty Tied Up.
