After Cream, I'm all into power trios now. Brilliant blues based guitars by Billy Gibbons (dubbed one of the most promising guitarists by Jimi Hendrix) and probably the only band still together after 35 years. Check out "La Grange", "Gimme All Your Lovin'"... The extended solos remind me of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

That Little Ol' Band from Texas, ZZ Top, is getting ready to hit the road for the first time since 2005.

So far, US dates are booked through late April. Shows get underway Tuesday (3/6) in Biloxi, MS, followed by stops in Florida, Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, California and a two-night stand in Las Vegas. Details are listed below.

ZZ Top's most recent studio album, "Mescalero," was released in 2003; a two-disc hits collection, "Rancho Texicano: The Very Best of ZZ Top," followed in 2004. Rumors have been swirling that the group is working on a new record.

Formed in 1969, ZZ Top is one of very few rock-and-roll bands with its original members still intact after three decades.

The band made some changes last year, splitting with manager Bill Ham, who was instrumental in the group's formation, and ending its tenure with RCA Records after 14 years, according to a press release.

OZZY OSBOURNE, ZZ TOP, GENESIS and HEART are the rumored artists that will be honored as part of the second annual "VH1 Rock Honors" event, which pays homage to the legends who influenced the sound of hard rock. According to Jeb Wright of Classic Rock Revisited, the program will be taped on Saturday, May 12 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas and will receive its television premiere on May 24. An official press release announcing this year's honorees is expected later today (Wednesday, March 7).

ZZ Top Anxious To Return To The Studio

More sooner than later is the word from ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill regarding a new album from the Texas-based rock act, which is currently between labels.

"As soon as we can write it, put it down and make a deal, but I don't really know how long that takes," Hill tells Billboard.com. "It's always important for us to record, so if we're not performing live, that's what we're doing. We're ready to get something new out."

Hill says there are plenty of ideas for the follow-up to 2003's "Mescalero," but no finished songs and timeframe for their release.

"We've come up with about 50 of them so I hesitate to even bring them up," Hill says. "We have 50 different titles, 50 different song ideas. Through the years we've had hundreds of ideas. We've been writing one song for about 25 years and if we ever did finish it, it would scare me."

There's also talk of a concert DVD, which would be the first for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame act. The band will have plenty of opportunities to record a performance this year, with its concert calendar showing a few European gigs next month followed by a handful of stateside dates. This week, the band is part of the Rock on the Range festival, which takes Saturday (May 19) in Columbus.

Hill says fans can expect a cross-section from ZZ Top's career, including obscure tracks such as "Brown Sugar" and "Francine" as well as the newer song "Mescalero."

This past weekend, the threesome took part in the Las Vegas taping of the second annual VH1 Rock Honors, which is due to air May 24. The band was saluted alongside Genesis, Ozzy Osbourne and Heart. But considering ZZ Top has been together nearly 40 years, what else is there to accomplish? "There's quite a bit," Hill says. "It's just onward and upward. [We] just [want to] keep on making the best music we can, every night we can."

HOUSTON (AP) - ZZ Top has cancelled its European tour so a band member can undergo treatment for a benign growth in his inner ear that is affecting his hearing.

Dr. Shawn Nasseri, a California otolaryngologist who is treating bassist and singer Dusty Hill, said that preliminary plans do not include surgery.

"In the near term, we plan to stabilize Dusty's hearing and symptoms with medication and a conservative management strategy," he said in a statement.

ZZ Top got its start in Houston in 1969 when local guitarist Billy Gibbons got together with Hill and drummer Frank Beard, from the Dallas-based band American Blues. The group has been touring for much of the spring and its European tour was to have started June 15 in Leipzig, Germany, and run into early July.

American dates, starting July 15 in Dallas, are not expected to be affected.

"I'm looking forward to dealing with this problem and getting back out there with Billy and Frank," Hill said. "I'm sure we'll put this behind us very shortly."

ZZ Top hits the road this summer for a round of festival performances that finds the band celebrating the forthcoming re-release of its most popular album.

The famously bearded Texas trio is due April 18 in College Station, TX, for a one-off gig at Texas A&M, but will mount longer campaigns in both June and August, with a total of 14 shows set for those two months. The band's summer run gets into gear June 6 in Enterprise, AL, as part of the three-day BamaJam music festival. All dates are below.

Bassist Dusty Hill told Billboard last year that the group is anxious to sign a new label deal and get a new album under way, but there's no timeline for how long that might take.

April 2008
18 - College Station, TX - Kyle Field at Texas A&M University

May 2008
23 - Orange Beach, AL - Amphitheater at the Wharf
31 - Louisville, KY - Godman Field/Fort Knox

June 2008
6 - Enterprise, AL - BamaJam Festival
7 - Atlanta, GA - Chastain Park Amphitheatre
12 - Chattanooga, TN - Riverbend Festival
13 - Jackson, MS - Jubilee! JAM
14 - Valdosta, GA - Wild Adventures Theme Park
19 - Gilford, NH - Meadowbrook
20 - Wallingford, CT - Chevrolet Theatre
21 - Rutland, TV - Summer Extravaganza

August 2008
7 - Sturgis, SD - Buffalo Chip Campground
9 - Sparta, WI - Constitution Park
10 - Springfield, IL - Illinois State Fair
23 - Aberdeen, MD - Shine Sports Field
24 - Essex Junction, VT - Champion Valley Exposition
30 - Milwaukee, WI - Summerfest

Don't get me wrong, I like the band, but after a while the songs all sound the same. They haven't put out a really good album for quite some time, IMO.
