Pilferk, I think she was talking about the GH lawsuit and how they released the record without consent from the band.

See, I don't see the difference.  II can't imagine that Interscope, owned by the same parent company, makes a different decision than the one that was made regarding GH....maybe, but I just don't see it.

I agree with you here because essentially the same people wanted to see some kind of recoup of their funds when they went ahead with that release. It doesn't matter which label releases it because they're all owned by UMG.

Does anyone know how many records GNR signed on to give Geffen back in the day?

I think I've heard 3 or 5. They've 'done' 2 already, so if it was 3 I wonder where a second GH would have put things.

I THINK (and this is based on reports at the time, not anything "official") it was 5 (this is with the renegotiation that occured around the time of Live Era).  1 Live album, 1 GH, and 3 albums of new studio material.

And I agree about the decisionmaking...while Geffen is operated independantly of Interscope, they are still operated under the direction of UMG...

I think the album needs to be finished before any label change becomes relevant. I can't see how anybody would 'want' Axl in their budget until he shows some product.

That's precisely one of the things that makes me wonder about any label switch.

Maybe if we decided to go on strike like that Italian w-site did before Christmas we could prompt Axl/Mgmt for an update on the progress they are making. Yeah, I doubt it too. Just a thought.? ?hihi

Pilferk, are you talking about the original gnr recording contract with Geffen-the 5 album thing? Or are you saying that Gnr actually owe Geffen three new albums as of now due to some renegotiation around 1999? (obviously Live Era and GH are out and done). I was always working under the assumption that Gnr was still operating under their original contract with Geffen-ie whatever they signed back in the 80's.

Mr iovine said he heard several of the songs that will be on cd, last summer.

@ madagas, enjoy a peanut butter (chunky) and banana sandwich.   beer

She represents several of the Universal labels. She's been with the company long enough that she can get any info she's looking for.

info like as to whether cd was handed over to Jimmy Iovine? Tongue
So, it's most likely coming from interscope, innit?

I'm just hoping at this point that the Interscope person says the album hasn't been turned in because it's actually coming through Geffen.

I'd rather GNR will be on a right label and in favourable circumstances.

How is Interscope any more "right" than Geffen?

That's not exactly what I said. I basically don't care whatever label as far as it offers the band great conditions.

but the answers might be found at the last few pages of this thread.

as for geffen's treatments, i think there were alternatives.
didn't they make a big change before that/around that period?

Aren't they on the Geffen label?

Thats at least what the website says.

Or are people assuming they are Interscope due to the End of Days soundtrack being an Interscope release.

They have to be. I suspect that is 90% of the reason Axl has been so adament about using the name the whole time, because he probably has access to a massive advance he otherwise would not have gotten just going out and negotiating a record deal as Axl Rose. You have got to figure working off that deal is the only reason this has gone on as long as it has.

The reports (uncorroborated so maybe better called rumors) around that time was that Axl renegotiated the GnR deal just before Live Era....actually, as part of releasing Live Era.   And the new contract called for 5 albums: 1 live, 1 GH, 3 new studio.

I'm SURE they're not working off the old 80's contract.....but when/what renegotiations have taken place...nobody is really sure outside of the rumors/reports.

There may have been alternatives, but....as a business decision, I don't think anyone should be surprised at what Geffen did...nor that most labels would do the exact same thing.  Especially one governed, largely, by the SAME parent company.

Did Geffen make any big changes around '04?  I don't think so.  They relaunched in '03 and the same basic management team was in place for quite awhile.....I think until late '05 or early '06 when their chairman left (he might have been promoted up to UMG...can't remember..have to check)...their current chairmans was hired in Aug of '06.

If thats the case why did axl sue when GH came out? I'm guessing that was nothing more than what you said.. A rumor

Because it came out prior to his wishes, and that it contained unapproved tracks from his point of view. I don't think they would've been able to release it if the contract hadn't allowed them to.

As true as that may be, I think he woulda sued whenever the label released it... I'm guessing he wanted CD out first.... And yes, if that contract did exist, thats why axl lost....

I thought it was under the old contract and the company was sick of waiting on axl for a new album.. they wanted to recoop their losses...

but like madagas said:

Axl told us in his letter that there were only very minor details remaining, things that he had been promised would have been taken care of in time for a 2006 release, which implies that whatever was left to do (contract negotiations, promotional planning, artwork, etc) were things that axl didn't need to be a part of, so then the recording and mixing etc. must have been done long ago. Also, he stated that as soon as they know that it is or is not coming out on march 6 he would tell us, which must mean that he doesn't know. Axl wouldn't lie to us, right? I mean, it was Merk who was responsible for all of the lies and lack of info and now that he's gone things must be better right?

I found this statement on AOL. Not sure how valid it is but...

"David Geffen's record company was the label for 'Democracy' for many unrewarding years, finally washing their hands of it by tossing it to Interscope. "

Go mid way down that page and right below the banner " Where's the Chinese Democracy" click on photo nr 11 of 19 and there you'll see David Geffen's pic and that statement. ? I love that banner that reads GNR AND THE CASE OF THE MISSING ALBUM. ? ? peace
