Interscope/Geffen/A&M are different parts of the same label. Jimmy Iovine is/was in charge of them. They're not really different labels anymore more like different departments of the same company.
Not anymore.
Ron Fair is the Chairman of Geffen, I think. He does report to Iovine...but Iovine is the Co-Chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M. It's oversight over all 3
seperate
labels. THAT position is a UMG position, not a direct Interscope one.
I know corporate mumbo-jumbo can be hard to follow.....and it IS sort of like they are all seperate departments in the same company...but they are all operated independantly (one does not make decisions for the other, etc). And they can't just throw talent, I'm pretty sure, back and forth between them.
But they did it with the Roots who went from Interscope to Geffen for Phrenology and The Tipping Point and with Sublime (who was on MCA which UMG bought out) and Geffen is now putting out their stuff such as the 10th anni reissue and the new box set.
That all said if Jimmy Iovine wants it to be an Interscope release it will be an Interscope release. But we'll all just wait and see. In 2003-2004 Geffen did get relaunched so now it is another label (I stand corrected).

Well, if contract negotiations are not finalized, how does anyone know what label it is coming out on?

And all those "moves" were new/different/renegotiated contracts. Not just "thrown" back and forth. That was my point. They can't just switch GnR from Geffen to Interscope on a whim and a prayer.
Even Jimmy has to comply with contract law. That being said, I'm not sure Jimmy cares enough about GnR (considering their relative place withing UMG) to go through the effort required to move them. People are saying Interscope has more resources/money behind it, so Jimmy might move GnR. That's simply not true anymore. Geffen is actually close to the size of Interscope...and on funding...when the funding comes from the same place, ultimately (UMG), it's tough to make the argument that Interscope has more.
Yes, If Iovine's heart is set on GnR at Interscope, he could make it happen (offering GnR a sweet contract to compel them to move). I just don't understand WHY he'd want to, unless their move has some sort of significance for UMG's plans for Geffen, as a whole.
Edit: Actually, roots move was a new (actually, renegotiated, I think) contract. Sublime's was not...all of MCA was rolled into Geffen when UMG bought them out.

We don't know anything about anything. That's true, for sure. Which is why I leave open that they COULD have moved to Interscope. I just don't know WHY they would have....unless UMG/Interscope offered them a sweetheart contract to move. And I don't know of any reason (which isn't to say there aren't some) they would do that.
See what I mean?
The one thing we do know is GnR has always been on Geffen, and is currently listed on Geffen's web site as one of their artists. When Geffen was relaunched, they took GnR with them.
Now, we have 2 different stories floating around. Like I said in my last post...we'll pretty much all just have to wait and see which one pans out as being true.

I guess that's why no mention has been made of the name of the label by the band side.
I'm not sure but didn't the myspace page use to say geffen?
Allegedly GH sold 7 million copies worldwide and counting. Isn't it enough for Geffen to cover the cost?
If I were in the position, I wouldn't prefer the one that has cut me off and released my work in disregard of my wishes.

Maybe cd is in the hand of Jimmy Iovine.

remember guys, for all we know the record company could have the album by now, and 6th march may still be the date.
its still 5 weeks away, and i'm sure the album could be suitably promoted in a 4 week timeframe.

See but thats the point in the debate. According to a source at Universal, they haven't turned in anything to the record company yet. The only way that source is reliable is if the record is indeed coming out on Interscope.

I really fail to see the point of most who are really talking up the level f promotion needed. Now, call me close minded (probably true), but i know what bands i generally like, and so i make sure i keep up with release dates of albums by those bands. I mean, theyre not baked beans- you cant easily get me to try a different band - so i think it could even be meaningfully promoted over just a couple weeks (tho i would hesitate to say less than that...?)
Im just sayin that certain people aree waiting for it and will buy it come what may, but attracting the other more casual fans is surely not an exact science? Surely all thats needed is a single and some public apearances? The single, in my view, could possibly even be released as late as the same day as the album. Some dont even think a single is necassary at all, and that doesnt sound too far fetched to me.
Its a pity theyre not on tour, but maybe theyre working that out at the moment too...? Please dont yell at me, just tell me why you think im wrong, if thats the case.

Or on any other universal label presumably? We surely have no real way of knowing where the album is right now?

She represents several of the Universal labels. She's been with the company long enough that she can get any info she's looking for.
I'm just hoping at this point that the Interscope person says the album hasn't been turned in because it's actually coming through Geffen.

info like as to whether cd was handed over to Jimmy Iovine?
So, it's most likely coming from interscope, innit?

I'd rather GNR will be on a right label and in favourable circumstances.

How is Interscope any more "right" than Geffen?

Agree Tank. New band needs to be in the "right circumstances"-we don't want them tied down by the legacy/legal issues of the old band. Good point about Geffen and the Greatest Hits lawsuit. Axl may not want to do business with them anymore. He may want a fresh start. I would too.

Pilferk, I think she was talking about the GH lawsuit and how they released the record without consent from the band.

See, I don't see the difference. II can't imagine that Interscope, owned by the same parent company, makes a different decision than the one that was made regarding GH....maybe, but I just don't see it.

I think the album needs to be finished before any label change becomes relevant. I can't see how anybody would 'want' Axl in their budget until he shows some product.
