Well, for what it is worth, someone on the VELVET ROPE definitely said it was coming out on Interscope as well. Before you bash, I looked at his prior posts and he is definitely in the "industry" and seems to know what he is talking about. My money is it comes out on Interscope.

That's what I've been told for at least a year as well by two seperate contacts at Universal. I'm just trying to get that clarified through at least one of them.

In the ongoing debate w/ the Universal contact about the label, here's the latest:
I have ofcourse sent a follow up email asking what any of that has to do with GNR and if they are releasing CD on Interscope.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
geffen sucks. i used to work for them.
it's better that they are on interscope, because that is the greatest label on earth, talent-wise. plus their staff is great. geffen on the other hand, not so much. geffen was a great label when david geffen ran it. now a douche bag runs it. so gnr is better off with them. a lot of bands switch from interscope to geffen or the other way around, like recently we had the Game go to geffen from interscope. And then beck went from geffen to interscope. good times.

I understand that the labels are owned by the same company. What I was asking is if you know for sure it'll be Intescope. I mean, why the change after every release being on Geffen?

geffen/interscope/a&m are all the same label. confusing. i know. but it will definitely be interscope.
It would be strange... But it could be those contract negotiations he was talking about. I still don't see Interscope wanting to get involved, or Geffen wanting to lose the royalties of the GNR catalog.

Interscope/Geffen/A&M are different parts of the same label. Jimmy Iovine is/was in charge of them. They're not really different labels anymore more like different departments of the same company.
They are owned by Universal but they ARE different companies. Kind of like how Pixar is owned by Disney now, but they still act as their own company.
http://biz.yahoo.com/ic/47/47914.html
Interscope Geffen A&M Records shines like a supernova in the musical universe. A division of recording industry titan Universal Music Group (UMG), Interscope Geffen oversees a diverse collection of record labels, including three of UMGs flagship imprints: Interscope, Geffen Records, and A&M Records. Interscope, best known for its rap and R&B artists, is responsible for some of UMG's best-selling albums, including works from top-sellers 50 cent and Eminem. Venerable A&M Records promotes a variety of artists such as Bryan Adams and Sheryl Crow. Geffen Record's focus is shifting from a mix of genres to commercial pop. Interscope Geffen's other labels include Aftermath Records, G-Unit Records, and Shady Records.
My point to all of this is that no one (including my contact at Universal) has given me any good or valid reason why the record would be imprinted through Interscope instead of Geffen.
The reason I'm trying to clarify is because of her (the Universal contact) saying that she spoke to the head of Interscopes Sales & Marketing on Friday morning. At that time he said the band had not turned in anything to the label as of yet.
So, if the record is coming on Geffen, I would tend to discount what a guy from Interscope would know about the album.
Does any of that make sense???
So Geffen and Interscope are both in competition with each other for the pending release of CD?

No. To my knowledge there's no competition whatsoever, just misinformation. That's all.

I just figured July would be the next best time if they miss this spring. Yes, because of the 20 year AFD anniversary. If you think the label wouldn't want to cash in I think you'd be wrong. Everyone keeps talking about how the label "needs/wants to recoupe their investment", but i don't think they'd just be satisfied with recouping their investment- you'd think they want to make a PROFIT, afterall they are a business. Making a profit may prove difficult considering cd sales have consistently fell nearly 5% a year since 2000. So, some sort of tie-in between the 2 (AFD anniv. & release of CD) may be an option that the label is considering- thinking there's a better chance to turn a profit? I don't know- it's just guessing on my part.
I know there's alot more than just recording the album to get that album in stores( contracts, etc..). I wonder if the label will want to do what some labels are doing with other bands- taking a certain percentage of their tour & merch revenue to make up for the lack of cd sales. I know Korn has a "profit sharing" deal with their label.
Just a note on the financials: Both Live Era and GH have been released under the current contract. Remember that when "figuring out"/estimating the labels investment and profit margin...

For the people that were discussing the label yesterday, I received a myspace reply from one of my Universal sources. Though the reply sounds like BS, here it is:

So.... have you confirmed which label is handling the GNR record? I'm just curious because you mentioned Interscope and up to this point every GNR release worldwide has been handled by Geffen.
Not true. Absolutely, positively, verifiably not true.
It USED to be true. Geffen was simply an imprint of Interscope. But they were "relaunched" as an independant label when UM aquired some smaller entities (Dreamworks Records and MCA, for example). They've been operating that way for a couple years, at least (maybe as long as 3 or 4...I can't remember the exact time frame). As things stand now, they're almost as big (but not quite) as Interscope, itself.

Not anymore.
Ron Fair is the Chairman of Geffen, I think. He does report to Iovine...but Iovine is the Co-Chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M. It's oversight over all 3
seperate
labels. THAT position is a UMG position, not a direct Interscope one.
I know corporate mumbo-jumbo can be hard to follow.....and it IS sort of like they are all seperate departments in the same company...but they are all operated independantly (one does not make decisions for the other, etc). And they can't just throw talent, I'm pretty sure, back and forth between them.

Here's my Qeustion :
1. Why couldn't Axl give us healthy updates up and until March 6 th regarding the Cd album release, process, I mean some of you have continuously stuck with this man through his thick and thin, amongst the hardest times. This would not be asking to much.Ecspecially people like Jarmo who have been patiently waiting for years for the album.
Doing this would give him grand exposure across the board internet wise , which is the real way , in 2007 , of promoting yourselve.
I just do not see how you harder core of fans could have stuck around this long.Spreading the good world , basically about nothing
Axl Rose owes you this much
Some of you have traveled to distant countrys on a working mans budget, to see him live ,waited in concert lines for hours upon hours , been stranded at train stations , air ports , street corners you name it.
What gives Axl ?

For what it's worth, I got a reply to my email.
This person is adamant that GnR is still on Geffen, and that, unless things have changed in the last week, CD will be a Geffen release.
Which is what they've said pretty much right along.
Guess we'll have to wait and see.
I still wonder if people, because the labels were so closely affiliated for so long, chalk Geffen up to being "part" of Interscope.

Because it's not realistic to do so (or to expect him to).
First off, would your rather he be penning "updates" or working to get this done?
Second, there is a lot of the process you're just not going to talk about. It can be dry, boring, and/or technical stuff. Some of it's also 'up in the air", to an extent. He'd potentially get lynched, daily, for some snippet of info that an armchair quarterback wouldn't like. And, like his open letters, the updates would get analyzed to death.
Third, would you want to have to pen daily updates about exactly what YOU did on your job every day?
C'mon....the man is not going to hold our hand through this entire process. No other band would either.

No, somebody else. Relatively close to Geffen.
Edit: But not close enough to have real specifics on the album, it's status, etc.

I know of one well known band the has no problem doing this ,
axl could have other people report here, not just himself.....this a is a great way to reach out to his internet bass of fans
"C'mon....the man is not going to hold our hand through this entire process. No other band would either."
hold our hand , who is going to buy this album and embrace him , when he decides to release it ?

I can see no good reason why that would be true.

I can't either, which is why I wonder.
Maybe it is true. Maybe they've decided to repurpose Geffen and GnR doesn't fit. There could be a whole slew of reasons "why" that we might not know. Which is why I don't completely dismiss the notion.
But it's puzzling and to me makes no sense...unless the renegotiation Axl talked about IS moving them over to interscope. But even that I wouldn't really understand because I just don't see any reasoning behind it.
Like I said...guess we'll have to wait and see.
