This is kind of an offshoot of the sitar thread, but does anyone play the tablas?  I've thought about getting a set once I have a little more money, but I don't know what to buy or how much it will cost me.

Also how hard are they to play?  Is it possible to teach yourself?

Any help is appreciated.

Hot Damn, it's Indian instrument week. Very cool.  ok

Yeah, I'm not looking to become some virtuoso on it.  I just want to be able to come up with some cool sounds from it.  I'm mainly a drummer, with most of my background coming in concert band and orchestral percussion, so I'm thinking/hoping it might come a little easier.

Being a drummer might help, but unlike drums, on a tabla you use all your fingers and your palm as well.

Yeah, I know that.  I've played a lot of hand drums over the years as well, congas, bongos, djembe, etc.
