a band whose singer is known for his screaming ability and range who uses neither.

Yeah, I've often wondered about that.? Cornell's voice sounds rather dry, thin and wispy to me these days (especially live) and I don't hear him coming anywhere near the vocal range he once had.? Do you feel this is a conscious/creative decision on his behalf, perhaps age, or is there another reason?

Does anybody know if Chris has ever had surgery to remove any polyps from his vocal chords?

Anyway, I've always thought he was an amazing singer, but his voice just sounds a bit off to me these days.

Cheers,
W.R.

I do feel it's a conscious decision. Maybe he feels that singing style is more suited to a band like Soundgarden and he may find it dated now. I don't know, but I do know that aside from their first single "Cochise," he hasn't really rocked it pretty hard at all. Not that he was balls out on that song either. Again though, he did the Casino Royale theme and was putting out a better range than he has on any of the three Audioslave albums, which brings me back to believing this is a conscious, creative decision. That's where the band clearly wanted to go, as even Tom Morello's guitar work is very under played. Everything is so under played. I just never cared for it.

I think its age and wearing his voice out singing for so many years and not having the proper vocal training? it happens to alot of singers who end up blowing their voices out.

I love Soundgarden & RATM, but Audioslave sucks (except the 1st one).

This is the best music news I've heard since early last year, when all the awesome concerts were being announced (GNR,Coachella,Download,Family Values,etc.).

I hope Rage goes on tour.  Maybe Audioslave... or even better yet - Soundgarden could tour with them!   Shocked

I really hope they decide to do more too i never got to see them back in the day and i'd really like to see them, hopefully since the Audioslave thing seems to be on the rocks they might consider going a bit further than just one show.

I read this article on mtv.com when it first posted, but couldn't find it later.  This explains it, I suppose:

With Cornell officially quitting Audioslave, here's hoping that Rage reunites for more than just Coachella...

More comments from Cornell about the hows and why of his departure.  I appreciated his perspecitve on Rage, but the part that surprised me the most was his mention of an Audioslave Greatest Hits records at some point in the future.  Does that sound weird to anyone else?
