In the UK we have this program called 'Big Brother' - basically it  works in the same way as the 'bread and circuses' idea did in ancient Rome - and is lapped up by those who for want of a better word or two - have rather low aspirations

Centering on unremarkable people dong banal things it electrifies the lives of those unable to engage in more meaningful activities

However some of the members havent towed the party line and dared express opinions, currently illegal in Britain

Today we had the Prime Minister himself addressing the issue in Parliament

Apparently members of the house have said 'rascist' remarks - shock!

My rather rambling point is the sad state the nation is in when silly comments from nobodies now merit the attention of the Prime Minister himself

I find it sad that the nation that founded the principles of democracy and free speach is now retreating from both

Certain comments are clearly beyond the pale - but surely everything up to (but not including) explicit calls for the death of another should be allowed and protected by law?

Housemates Jade Goody, Danielle Lloyd and Jo O'Meara have been seen making fun of Bollywood star Shetty's accent.

On Monday night's episode, former S Club 7 star O'Meara reportedly suggested that Indians were thin because they were always ill as a result of undercooking their food.

The trio also complained that Shetty had touched other housemates' food with her hands.

Former beauty queen Lloyd said: "You don't know where those hands have been."

Maybe this is beside the point, but I think it's a bit much to automatically "judge" everyone watching that stuff. A lot people watch if _after_ engaging in those meaningful activities you speak of. I'm sure you yourself have, at some point, for example played a computer game that isn't intellectually stimulating or in any way productive, just to relax.

Anyway, just an observation, because people often get off on that kind of bashing, even though they do similar things themselves.
