HARLESTON, W.Va. - A man beset by problems since winning a record lottery jackpot says he can't pay a settlement to a casino worker because thieves cleaned out his bank accounts.

Powerball winner Jack Whittaker gave that explanation in a note last fall to a lawyer for Kitti French, who accused him of assaulting her at the Tri-State Racetrack and Gaming Center, a slots-only casino near Charleston, according to a motion French's lawyer filed this week demanding payment of the confidential settlement.

Whittaker won nearly $315 million on Christmas 2002, then the largest undivided lottery prize in U.S. history. He took his winnings in a lump sum of $113 million after taxes.

Since then, he has faced his granddaughter's death by drug overdose; he has been sued for bouncing checks at Atlantic City, N.J., casinos; he has been ordered to undergo rehab after being arrested on drunken driving charges; his vehicles and business have been burglarized; and he has been sued by the father of an 18-year-old boy, a friend of his granddaughter's, who was found dead in Whittaker's house.

In the latest lawsuit, Whittaker told French's lawyer, John Barrett, that "a team of crooks" cashed checks in September at 12 City National Bank branches and "got all my money," according to the motion Barrett filed Wednesday in state court.

"I intend to pay but can't without any money," Whittaker wrote, according to the motion.

An official with City National Bank said Friday the bank is investigating "small discrepancies" in Whittaker's accounts.

Calls to Whittaker and his lawyers Friday were not immediately returned.

This guy is a dumbass in the first place for living like a common pauper while he has 113 million in fucking checking accounts.  Anyhow I always thought there was more to this story, possibly him hiding a shitload of money for tax evasion purposes, but on the other hand......one thing I will agree with in this story is that Lottery money is cursed.

I won $2000 on a scratch off lottery ticket 2 months ago.  I never play them, but something told me to buy a $20 one day so I stopped and sure enough bam....$1000.  Well I had to go to the PA Lottery headquarters and claim it.  Two days later the rear end on my Chevy Blazer went out and everything started grinding and it caused like $1400 worth of damage (which is about all I had left from the money after taxes).....so bam.....easy come, easy motherfucking go.  My Blazer never gave me one problem before that.  Now $113 million......come on guy...my grandfather had me filling out his checks one month because he had gotten bad from Parkinson's and couldn't write......well I signed his name to the check for like $14 bucks and the next day they were calling him with a verification alert.  So that's what tells me there is something way more to this than what this guy is saying.  His past is shady as it is with drugs, hookers, dui's etc...so who knows.

I also saw that 60 minutes where they had like 5 people who won millions and their lives just started falling apart.  One guy gave so much money away that by the time he was finished he had nothing for himself, then everyone else disowned him once he was broke.  The other I remember actually had family members pushing numerous lawsuits against them for millions of dollars to which some actually won.  Another dude actually went in debt like 700k because he got all those loans before he got his actual lottery money and he blew all that and then had to pay a shitload back which he didn't have.  The last one's wife divorced him as soon as he won and she got like half the money (just like in that movie with Nicholas Cage and Rosie Perez).

I'll tell you what. If I ended up with 113 million after taxes, I'd sure as shit not have trouble living very comfortably on it for the remainder of my life. I wouldn't even bother to invest it!

its because he chose to receive it all in one lump sum.   It would have been more if he had taken it over a period of years.

This turkey is totally brain-dead.  If he owned a funeral parlor, no one would die.
