Axl's UYI-era Mason t-shirt had the qoute "Charlie don't surf" on the back.  The quote is from the film Apocalypse Now, where is refers to the Vietcong.   Does anyone know what relevance it has to Charles Manson?

I always assumed it was a combination of Robert Duvalls line in Apocalypse Now! and Mansons personality.

Maybe the makers of the shirt just thought that it was a cool thing to put on the back. And Charlie (Manson) doesn't surf, being in prison and all.

As far as I know its a little poke at the fact that Charlie was involved with the Beach Boys and Dennis Wilson kind of promised him a record deal. And then shortly after that the whole Tate/ LaBianca murders happened. So I think its a joke about how he never got the record deal and his relationship with the Beach Boys was over.

Hence: Charlie Don't Surf

Thats what I thought the reasoning was for the quote.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Ok, here goes.

Duvall says 'Charlie don't surf' in response to Martin Sheens opinion on surfing in the middle of a battle with the Vietcong not being a good idea. It's ambigious, but most likely implies that to Duvalls character the enemy is different from him and us, he doesn't like them or respect them. They don't surf, or in other words, they don't jive.

There can be no doubt that Manson fits the same descreption. He's an outsider, he's crazy, he's dangerous, he doesn't surf.

That's my take on it.

This was the explantion at the end of the Manson Family, a recent movie about, you'll never guess who, the Manson family.

However, after watching a documentary on Charlie Manson, they explained Charlie Don't Surf was in reference to Manson's Godlike persona, he wasn't a regular California hippie...Charlie Don't Surf.

'charlie don't surf' is also a pretty awesome song by the clash off sandinista! it would have to play into the t-shirt design in my opinion.

here are the lyrics:

CHORUS
Charlie don't surf and we think he should
Charlie don't surf and you know that it ain't no good
Charlie don't surf for his hamburger Momma
Charlie's gonna be a napalm star

Everybody wants to rule the world
Must be something we get from birth
One truth is we never learn
Satellites will make space burn

We've been told to keep the strangers out
We don't like them starting to hang around
We don't like them all over town
Across the world we are going to blow them down

continued below...

advertisement

CHORUS

The reign of the super powers must be over
So many armies can't free the earth
Soon the rock will roll over
Africa is choking on their Coca Cola

It's a one a way street in a one horse town
One way people starting to brag around
You can laugh, put them down
These one way people gonna blow us down

CHORUS

Charlie don't surf he'll never learn
Charlie don't surf though he's got a gun
Charlie don't surf think that he should
Charlie don't surf we really think he should
Charlie don't surf

Charlie don't surf and we think he should
Charlie don't surf and you know that it ain't no good
Charlie don't surf for his hamburger Momma
Charlie don't surf

its pretty anti-imperialism and I would be willing to bet that Axl probably likes it... if you've ever listened to it he would probably like to dance to it as well. hope this helps

peace out

MY view was "Charlie" was slang for what the US troops called the Vietcong..  Doesn't he say it when they are fighting to take a beach or land near a beach?
