I've never been a big fan of van der Saar, but I've seen him in a few Holland matches lately, and he seems at the top of his game. Anyway, he can't be worse than the two clowns ManU had last season

I think he's a decent buy. He obviously wasn't meant to be a permanent replacement due to his age, so I think he'll be good to have until we find someone exceptional.

Yeah, thank God he signed a new contract, but Paul Robinson would have been
perfect
for them.
Just the right age that he is really comming into his own, and is well aware of how to order around his defence, and yet with possible another decade of Premiership football ahead of him. And a regular on the international scene is allways a good thing.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho may have to re-structure his list of transfer targets if the club have to resolve their row over Frank Arnesen by selling Glen Johnson and Robert Huth to Tottenham.
Both England right-back Johnson and Germany centre-half Huth are now believed to be part of a cash-plus-player compensation package designed to end the feud before Friday's noon deadline.
Spurs, incensed by pictures of their suspended sporting director on Roman Abramovich's yacht this week, reacted by issuing a terse statement demanding that Chelsea reach a settlement by the deadline or face being the subject of another Premier League 'tapping-up' investigation.
But the sale of Johnson and Huth could trigger a further outlay for the Barclays Premiership champions if Mourinho feels they need to be replaced to keep his 24-man squad in tact.
France defender William Gallas will provide adequate cover for first-choice central defenders Ricardo Carvalho and skipper John Terry but Mourinho may be forced to buy a back-up player for first-choice right-back Paulo Ferreira. (

Atleast there's always Jose to keep us interested. Yet again Jose has worked miracles. He's turned a negative in to a positive. Just when you thought chelski were fucked for tapping up yet again, Mourinho manages to defuse the situation and offload Glen "What on earth do coaches keep seeing in me?" Johnson too.
Genius. Sheer Genius.

Indeed - he can get rid of crap, avoid a ban and laugh in everyone's face that he's above the law
If the FA weren't so pathetic (and too busy having affairs) they'd deduct a whole load of points from Chelsea, but spineless officials and Roman's money means Chelsea get a free hand where they please

Holders Liverpool have been drawn against Welsh side Total Network Solutions in the first qualifying round of the Champions League.
Thank god we didn't draw the Kazakstan team - a trip to Almaty would have been just what the team didn't need so soon in the season!

Inter security for Ver?n
Friday, 24 June 2005
FC Internazionale Milano have completed a deal to sign Juan Sebasti?n Ver?n from Chelsea FC on a two-year contract.
No details
No details have been revealed of any fee paid for the Argentinian midfield player who was on loan at Inter for the 2004/05 season, after spending the previous campaign at Stamford Bridge. The 30-year-old was determined to stay at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium and the Nerazzurri were equally keen to keep him.
Finalised deal
"Making a concrete deal with Ver?n was one of our priorities for the transfer market and I'm very pleased we reached an agreement with Chelsea," said Inter director Gabriele Oriali.
Busy season
The former CA Boca Juniors, UC Sampdoria, Parma FC, S.S. Lazio and Manchester United FC player made 39 appearances for Inter in all competitions in 2004/05. Inter finished third in Serie A, won the Coppa Italia and reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

Argentina beat Mexico today.
Cambiasso hits the spot
Sunday, 26 June 2005
FC Internazionale Milano midfield player Esteban Cambiasso struck the decisive spot-kick as Argentina defeated Mexico in a penalty shoot-out to reach the FIFA Confederations Cup final in Germany.
Double dismissal
The game was goalless at the end of 90 minutes, although both players had been reduced to ten men in added time, FC Barcelona centre-half Rafael Marquez's second yellow card coming moments after Bar?a's Javier Saviola had been shown a straight red for kicking an opponent.
Deadlock broken
Carlos Salcido broke the deadlock 14 minutes into extra time, his shot taking a deflection to fox Argentinian goalkeeper G?rman Lux, it seemed Mexico were on course to cause an upset.
Figueroa leveller
However, there was still time for Villarreal CF forward Luciano Figueroa to equalise, controlling a high ball before sending a shot skidding through the legs of Mexican goalkeeper Oswaldo S?nchez and over the line.
Brazil await
All ten of the regulation penalties were converted but once Mexico's Ricardo Osario had seen Lux save his first sudden-death attempt, the scene was set for Cambiasso to stroke home his spot-kick and set up a final date with South American rivals Brazil on Wednesday.

that was a terrible game of football. two teams getting 8 or 9 men behind the ball at every opportunity. God how i loathe wingback systems.

Well, Premiership teams are much bigger fanbase-wise than any German team, only the Spanish teams (with their world wide latino following) can really compete. Ur always going to find more ''fans'' of the english game and teams than virtually any other league

Oh c'mon - all the teams were terrible - it is the third stage, TNS are probably better than most of them
The bribery going on surrounds Chelsea who avoid bans and fines all the time.....and of course Man Utd have been paying off refs for decades - whats that, about 4 penalties against at Old Trafford in like 10 years - how strange!

Collina is back
Extra time for Collina and Co
Wednesday, 29 June 2005
Football's most famous official, Pierluigi Collina, today had his career extended by a further season following a rule change by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).
Final game
The bald-headed referee thought he had presided over his final game on Sunday when US Triestina Calcio defeated Vicenza Calcio to preserve their Serie B status. Regulations in place at the time said once referees reached the age of 45 - which Collina did in February - they had to retire at the end of that campaign.
World Cup
However, new rules put forward by the Italian Referees' Association and ratified by the FIGC today mean referees can continue until the end of the calendar year in which they turned 45 and also complete that season. Collina will now be able to oversee matches in 2005/06 before retiring ahead of the FIFA World Cup in Germany.
Goal difference
Meanwhile, the FIGC will use goal difference to separate teams level on points for one experimental season next term, having previously favoured play-offs to decide such matters as the destination of the title, European placings and relegation issues.
